Lineage tracing and live-imaging studies revealed that the JCF could contribute to both cardiomyocytes and the proepicardium. Thus, the JCF represents the earliest progenitor of the epicardium.

Among these, we found a new progenitor pool, which we termed the Juxta-Cardiac Field (JCF), since it overlays the cardiac crescent but is distinct from the First Heart Field.

Using combinatorial whole-mount imaging we anatomically located these progenitor types over the course of heart formation.

We used single-cell RNA-seq to characterise cell subpopulations during cardiac crescent to early linear heart tube development. We identified several progenitor populations and their transition states towards cardiomyocytes.
