The industrial food system is the leading cause of biodiversity loss via deforestation and synthetic pesticides & fertilizers for animal feed crops. According to @UNEP, threatens >85% of the 28,000 species at risk of extinction. @WorldBank: #StopFinancingFactoryFarming

NEW: Our letter published today in the @FT questions @WorldBank fossil finance.
Fossil fuels are not the future.
Evidence shows pairing RE with long-duration energy storage solutions provides a cleaner, more cost-effective answer for most cases.

❗️Fossil fuel projects backed by @WorldBank - past & present - have caused irreversible harm to the health & livelihoods of local communities.
Their voices have gone unheard. Until now.

Multilateral development banks (MDBs) like @IFC_org & @BIDInvest continue to invest billions in #FactoryFarming. Our new @S3F_global report urges them to exclude industrial livestock & feed operations from sectors they consider “Paris-aligned.”

Update: The World Bank can't follow its stated mission of eradicating poverty with leadership that doesn't accept the scientific consensus around climate change.

This is also critical for supporting climate just development. As @NnimmoBassey and @AnabelaLemos write, fossil fuel extraction in Africa has deepened inequalities, failed to deliver energy access, & increased militarization and political oppression. fam.ag/3qXWrhi

The science is clear that investing in new fossil fuel infrastructure, including #LNG, is not compatible with 1.5°C, while clean energy investment needs are significant. Public finance should be used strategically to unlock large sums of private finance for just climate solutions

If anything, yesterday’s report reminds us that these countries should accelerate their efforts to shift international public finance out of fossil fuels to clean energy rather than backsliding on their commitments: wapo.st/3K6wDXE

At the last climate conference in Glasgow, 39 countries & institutions responsible for USD 24bn/yr in int’l public finance for fossil fuels committed to #StopFundingFossils by the end of 2022 and shift 💸 to clean energy. Throwback to this quote from OCI's @LaurievdBurg 👇

The @IPCC_CH says public finance plays a 🗝️ role. We agree - public backing for projects through finance provided by (multilateral) development finance institutions & export credit agencies helps lower investment risks and leverages huge sums of private finance.

We’d add that with volatile, soaring fossil fuel prices, Putin’s fossil fueled war in Ukraine & deadly air pollution; energy efficiency & renewable energy solutions are not only a logical answer to the #climatecrisis, but also to unaffordable energy bills, war & people’s health.
Ladd Connell retweeted
The good news is that the @IPCC_CH says that renewable alternatives like solar, wind & battery storage can rapidly replace fossil fuels this decade. They are already the cheaper sources of electricity in many regions.
