Wrap-up of the #PT4L HBCU Showcase at Summit Academy North in Romulus, MI:
After drill work, the players were broken up into 6 teams for scrimmage play. Teams 1-3 and 4-6 each played a round-robin pool with Teams 1 & 4 advancing to the championship game. This was a fun event because there were a lot of players that I had not previously seen along with some players that I have seen 1 or more time with their high school teams.
I have selected an 8-person All-Tournament Team based on my observations along with 8 more Newcomers to Note (N2N). [In individual showcases, it always seems that the players that draw the most attention are players with size and lead guards, and that is definitely the case today with 5 players at 6'+ along with 3 PGs. Division 1 state runner-up Detroit Renaissance had 3 players in attendance, all juniors, and all 3 stood out with their strong play.] See pictures of the 8 All-Tournament Team members below.
All-Tournament Team:
@Kazyiaforrest_1 (5'3" PG, '27, Mumford HS) of Team 2
Top 2027--Kazyia Forrest was fast with the ball in transition as well as quick and shifty in the half court. She put constant pressure on the defense to create scoring opportunities for herself and others, and was aggressive defensively to create turnovers and pick up loose balls.
@JaylaAdams2028 (6'1" F, '28, Renaissance HS) of Team 5
Top 2028--Jayla Adams had a major impact on both ends of the court using her length and athleticism to block shots, gather rebounds, attack the basket, and score smoothly around the rim. Adams plays hard and just seems to get better every time I see her play.
@KassidyCain3 (5'3" PG, '28, Renaissance HS) of Team 6
Crafty Award--Kassidy Cain used her craftiness to score in a variety of ways in traffic despite her size, and created well for teammates. She is aggressive defensively and pushes the ball well in transition.
Afiya Khalifa (6'1" C, '28, Scarborough Blue Lancers (CAN)) of Team 2
Top Post--Canadian Afiya Khalifa is a strong, physical back-to-the-basket post with good footwork that can score with both power and finesse moves inside.
Kennedy McClinton (6'0" F, '28, Southeastern HS) of Team 3
Co-Hustle Award--Kennedy McClinton used her length and athleticism to protect the paint defensively and crash the glass offensively. She runs the floor well to get to the rim in transition and accumulates deflections and steals on defense.
Brooklyn Robinson (6'3" F/C, '28, American International Academy) of Team 1
Championship Game Co-MVP--Brooklyn Robinson picked up her play over the last 2 games, playing through contact to score off the drive, cut, post up, or offensive rebound, while also showing the versatility to run the floor and attack the basket in transition.
@mariawalker2028 (5'5" PG, '28, Renaissance HS) of Team 4
Championship Game Co-MVP--Like Robinson, Maria Walker also picked up her play over the last 2 games. She seems to be at her best when opponents pick up their aggressiveness, routinely getting into the lane and making the right play in the championship game.
@Kamauri_Green0 (6' F/W, '30, Rogers HS (OH)) of Team 6
Top Underclassman--With smooth handles, the ability to score at all 3 levels, and the length, size, and physicality to routinely cause mismatches, Ka'mauri Green was extremely impressive despite not yet playing a high school game. She was dangerous in transition being able to use her handles to get defenders off balance, her physicality to play through reach ins, her size to score over defenders, and her body control and touch to finish off the board or over the rim.
.
N2N:
@Pring18Mariah (5'5" G, '27, Wayne Memorial HS) of Team 1
Co-Hustle Award--Mariah Pringle was one of the top on-the-ball defenders at the event, making opposing ball handlers work to get the ball and then work the length of the court. She took advantage when ball handlers made mistakes and got after loose balls.
Lillianne Alsabeh (5'5" G, '29, Crestwood HS) of Team 5
Lillianne Alsabeh buried open shots while being fundamentally sound with the ball in her hands. She also showed the ability to create her own shot with her step back.
Mekal Johnson (5'5" G, '29, American International Academy) of Team 1
Mekal Johnson showed solid handles and attacked the paint aggressively and repeatedly, showing good body control to score off the drive and good awareness to find open teammates.
Brianna Omere (5'9" W, '29, Scarborough Blue Lancers (CAN)) of Team 3
Brianna Omere is a lanky, very athletic slasher that glides up and down the court, attacking the basket aggressively and running plays down defensively. She used her length and aggressiveness to be disruptive defensively and was active on the boards offensively.
Maya Vloet (5'5" G, '29, Scarborough Blue Lancers (CAN)) of Team 3
Maya Vloet had a solid all-around performance, playing scrappy defense, handling the ball well, making good decisions at the point, pushing the ball in transition, and hitting open shots.
@Ariyah3jack (5'8" G, '30, Cass Tech HS) of Team 4
Ariyah Jackson was aggressive offensively, defensively, and on the boards. She seemed to be around every loose ball, hit the boards, and attacked the basket aggressively on the break or off the drive.
Evonna Chehab (5'4" G, '31) of Team 3
Middle schooler Evonna Chehab caught my eye in warm ups as every time I looked up she seemed to hit another shot. In game play, she fit right in playing against older competition, including burying a step back 3 with a hand in her face and a side step 3 off a baseline in-bounds.
Asia Patrick (5'6" G, '31) of Team 1
Middle schooler Asia Patrick drew notice right away with her quickness and hustle in the defensive station. Her scrappiness translated well to game play defensively and offensively she showed good body control as she put it on spin cycle to score off the drive/break multiple times with her spin move.
