Mutations in the LMNA gene, encoding lamins A/C, cause severe dilated cardiomyopathy. But what drives the disease? Disrupted chromatin organization & gene regulation or mechanical damage to the nucleus? Distinguishing these mechanisms is critical for developing new therapies.

Our findings suggest that targeting nuclear rupture and its downstream consequences could open new therapeutic avenues for LMNA cardiomyopathy! THANK YOU to Noam Zuela-Sopilniak, Julien Morival, our collaborators & funders: @NIH (NHLBI, @NIH_NIAMS, NIGMS) & the Mills family. 6/7

Can protecting the cell nucleus prevent heart failure—even when the genetic defect remains? Our new study in @CircRes suggests it can! We identify nuclear envelope rupture as a key driver of LMNA-related cardiomyopathy. doi.org/10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.1… #Mechanobiology, #lamins, #LMNA 1/7

Advice for new PhD students: choose a mentor who is committed to your training, not just your project. The most important product of your PhD - even more important than the science - is you, a newly trained scientist.
