Ten years.
More than a thousand documented land and natural-resource contestations.
Thousands of field notes, maps, laws, satellite images and data points.
And hundreds of stories of communities sustaining shared landscapes and livelihoods.
We’re putting them all in one place.
Lay of the Land
Evidence from a Decade of Change
8–11 December 2026 | India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

At the centre of the conversation: India’s renewable-energy transition and the land questions it is creating, forest rights, commons, coasts, the footprint of data centres, gender, climate resilience and the future of development decisions.

📢 New documentary out
👉As India pushes for its ambitious renewable energy targets, agrivoltaics, combining agriculture with solar panels on the same land, is being hailed as a gamechanger. But what is the on-ground reality?
👉To explore this, @down2earthindia traveled to ground zero: the Indra Solar Farm in Khargapur district and the Adarsh Jeevan Solar Farm in Sagar district, of Madhya Pradesh.
👉Our new film dives deep into whether this dual land-use model can actually bridge the gap between food and energy security, or if it brings hidden challenges to local communities.
👉While the technology looks promising on paper, major questions remain. Is this new technology genuinely feasible at scale in India? More importantly, who can actually afford it?
👉We bring in expert insights to dissect these critical issues. Priya Pillai from ASAR highlights the socio-economic impacts of land diversion, while Mrinali from @LandConflicts sheds light on the rising land conflicts driven by rapid renewable energy expansion.

Last few weeks were very productive. From moderating a panel and conducting a workshop on common lands in Bhubaneswar to attending briefings on plastic litter in Alwar - I have learnt a lot about today’s policy and climate landscape.
Here’s hoping to attend more such events!

Villagers in Maharashtra’s Pench Tiger Reserve misled into signing away their land rights. Forest officials issued fine receipts as ‘proof of occupation,’ only for them to later be used to deny claims under Forest Rights Act.
