I like how straightforward Chinese medical terms are: 糖尿病 - diabetes (sugar urine disease) 腺鼠疫 - bubonic plague (gland rat epidemic) 狂犬病 - rabies (mad dog disease) 冠状病毒病 - Covid (crown-shaped virus illness) #langtwt

Yes, you can use 그리고 (= and) and say: 공원에 갈 거예요. 그리고 책을 읽을 거예요. (= I will go to the park. And I will read a book.) The difference is that when you say 공원에 가서 책을 읽을 거예요, you are certainly going to read that book at that park. With 공원에 갈 거예요 + 그리고 + 책을 읽을 거예요, it can sound like maybe the two actions of "going to the park" and "reading a book" might not be related or connected. (In other words, you could go to the park at 1 pm and then much later at 4 pm, you might read a book somewhere else.)

#langtwt #langchat #LanguageLearning #linguistics #LanguageMatters Really worth having a look at this if language acquisition is your thing
Had a great interview with @JamesStubbs1979 on vocabulary acquisition and why most vocabulary teaching is a fool's errand. Watch it here: youtube.com/watch?v=UK5ZzY-_…

Do Spanish speakers outside the U.S. use 'como' in phrases such as the one in this meme 'La llamé como cinco veces' as a filler word (meaning 'about') or is this just influence from English?

Something many people miss is that although かわいい does means "cute", in many contexts it just means "attractive" It's not that Japanese girls want to be "cute" (rather than "beautiful" or "pretty"), it's that かわいい is simply the most common term for "physically attractive"

White is dead, or so Black thought when playing the last move (…Ra3-b3). What nasty shocker did White drop on the board to send Black home in pure frustration? Charbonneau - Laurain, Montreal 2001

I've learnt this year. 1. Learning and reflection can move us away from biases. 2. It is not a good idea to learn languages in a disembodied way. This is my final video of the year. Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas #langtwt youtu.be/1fB1El_lbkA

In November this year, something huge happened. The world's most multilingual library with millions of books was taken down by the FBI assisted by Amazon and Google. The law was reestablished but millions lost access to books. #langtwt #booktwt youtube.com/watch?v=tsFdPqe6…

Why not make 2023 the year you stop using disembodied memorising apps and start acquiring language and learning about culture? #langtwt youtu.be/xpoMCsiI0oI

There seems to be a body of advice floating around the internet that says, don't read or listen when you're learning a language. Here we challenge this and say do what you enjoy- here's why #langtwt #langchat youtube.com/watch?v=o0N7XsDT…

A real insight into how somebody becomes completely multilingual. Both what they do and what they avoid doing. Thanks @LanguageElise #langtwt youtube.com/watch?v=Ta9d257o…

Language shift only needs one or two generations, and then it's gone:
A primary school teacher: “30 years ago I used to first explain things to 1st graders in Svan, and then repeat it in Georgian, bc they came to school with little or no knowledge of Georgian. These days, 1st graders don’t speak any Svan”
