Big Bend isnโt simply a fight over whether America should secure its border. CBP says it was not building a 30-foot wall through the national park. The plans involved access roads, surveillance and vehicle barriers in an area where enormous cliffs already provide a natural barrier. Even Republicans, including Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Chip Roy, questioned whether this particular construction made sense.
Abbott contacted federal officials and says he was assured there would be no wall or fence in Big Bend National Park. CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott then paused construction for an on-the-ground review and meetings with local officials. (โ The Texas Tribune)
But since Gutierrez wants to make this about Abbottโs border leadership, his own voting record is fair game. Gutierrez has served in the Texas Senate since 2021 and voted NO on SB 3, the $1.54 billion border-security appropriation, and NO on SB 4, Texasโ illegal-entry enforcement law.
Protecting Big Bend and securing the border do not have to be opposing goals. Secure the places that need securing, use technology where geography already provides the barrier, and protect a national park where unnecessary construction could do permanent damage.
