I was walking to the building where I work in Oxford when I passed three young girls speaking Farsi and I couldn’t help but run back and ask if they were from Afghanistan. They said yes. It had been a few months since their arrival as refugees waiting in Pakistan, now studying at a local school in Oxford. I was swelling with emotion. These girls just escaped 5 years of gender persecution under the Taliban. Erasure of their schools. And are now in Oxford, studying freely. Thank you to the U.K government for giving them a second chance. As a former refugee myself, we all just need one chance, as Canada gave to my mother and I. Two sets of Afghan women, escaping two Taliban regimes, meeting in Oxford. All in the hopes of finding freedom through education.

#BREAKING🚨 With tears streaming down their faces and documents clutched in their hands, a numbers of homeless women and their young children in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, are crying out desperately for help. These mothers, as she says some of them widowed, are facing displacement and uncertainty, with nowhere safe to turn. A mother crying with load voice say: “Who will come to our rescue? Who will help us? We have thrown us out of our homes!” Afghan women and girls are already deprived of education, employment and fundamental freedoms. Now, more women and children are reportedly being forced from their homes, facing hunger, homelessness and despair. Where are the United Nations and international human rights organisations? The world must not abandon these mothers and children. This gender apartheid and crimes against humanity. #SaveAfghanWomen #FreeAfghanWomen #UN

Today is International Day of the Girl, but what does it mean for girls in Afghanistan when the doors of schools and universities remain closed to them? 💔🌿

Phenomenal tweet. October 7th should be remembered for what happened to 1,200 innocents with no “yeah buts” as we’ve seen from so many on here. So let a brave Muslim say what many have been screaming for years. Two highlights before you read the whole thing: “So let me say this clearly. Hamas and the IRGC are not merely enemies of Islam. That would be too small a charge, as if their crime were only against us. They are enemies of God. And we Muslims have been too quiet. Some of us were afraid. Some told ourselves it was not our business. Some, God forgive them, felt something other than horror that morning and never confessed it. Silence was the soil this poison grew in. I will not add to it.” Well said in the extreme.
A Statement of Conscience on October 7 I will not start by saying ‘as a Muslim’ or ‘as an imam’, but as a human being. On October 7, over 1,200 innocent people were killed in a single day. Families were shot in their homes. Young people out dancing were hunted across open fields. Over 250 people, including children and the elderly, were dragged into Gaza as hostages. I think of a mother hiding in a safe room with her baby’s mouth covered. I think of a father listening as the line went quiet. I think of families who waited month after month for someone to come home, only to receive a coffin. I didn’t need my faith to recognize the evil of what happened. My heart told me first. But I’m a Muslim and an imam, and I owe the world one honest sentence: what was done that day was a crime against God. God teaches that whoever kills one innocent soul, it is as if he had killed all humanity. This day has an author: Yahya Sinwar. He planned it, ordered it, and knew what would follow. Every death of that day and war he started rests on him and Hamas leaders who sat in tunnels and foreign hotels and called slaughter a victory. It rests on every Palestinian leader who cheered, excused, handed out sweets, or said nothing. They chose this. They own it. But Sinwar did not invent himself. He was the fruit of a tree planted almost a century ago by the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas named itself in its founding charter as the Brotherhood’s branch in Palestine. The Brotherhood’s poison is slow. It arrives through study circles, youth camps, charity boxes, and kind words to lonely young men. Drop by drop, it teaches him that his religion is a political party, his neighbour is his enemy, the Jew is the cause of his sorrow, and God is pleased by rage. By the time the gun arrives, the soul is already taken. I have seen this poison in mosques where sermons became rallies and young men could recite slogans but not sit still for a verse on mercy. Every people that let the Brotherhood in has paid in blood and ruined generations. It has never built anything it did not first set on fire. Behind Hamas stands another hand: the IRGC. It was the IRGC’s money, weapons, and training that turned a hateful idea into an army. One calls itself Sunni and the other Shia, and they may curse each other’s creeds, but they are united in what they worship. It is not God. It is power. The same IRGC that armed the killers of October 7 shoots Iranian girls for showing their hair, hangs young men for asking to be free, and has left graves from Tehran to Damascus to Beirut. They speak in God’s name. So did Pharaoh speak in the name of heaven. So let me say this clearly. Hamas and the IRGC are not merely enemies of Islam. That would be too small a charge, as if their crime were only against us. They are enemies of God. God is the Giver of life, yet they deal in death. God calls Himself the Most Merciful, yet they have made cruelty a sacrament. God honoured the children of Adam, yet they look at a child and see a target or a shield. To murder what God created and sign His name to it is the oldest blasphemy. And we Muslims have been too quiet. Some of us were afraid. Some told ourselves it was not our business. Some, God forgive them, felt something other than horror that morning and never confessed it. Silence was the soil this poison grew in. I will not add to it. So on this anniversary, let us say plainly what our scripture already says. The Jews are not our enemies. They are our cousins in Abraham, and their dead were created by the same God who created us. Today belongs to them: the murdered, the hostages, and families who still set a place at the table. To them I say: I am sorry for what was done to you by men who used the words of my prayers. You’re not alone in your grief or remembrance. The enemies of God are those who murder in His name. We know their names. It is time we said them from our own pulpits, in our own voices, before they speak for us again. Imam Tawhidi

This is extremely disappointing. The women of Afghanistan are treated as sub-human. The girls are denied and education. Child marriage and mental, physical and sexual abuse are rife. We ask the ECB to stand with Afghan women and girls without compromise. England to allow stars to play in Afghan T20 despite stance on Taliban thetimes.com/article/1764e5c…

If everyone began using the term "triangle" to mean "triangles, green rectangles, and circles with thick borders" it would not change the meaning of the word "triangle", which refers to a real underlying concept without which geometry and engineering cannot be practiced. It would merely muddy and obscure and add ambiguity to the usage of the term, and thus to the various uses the concept serves -- indeed, the resulting ambiguities would utterly derange the functioning of those systems that are ordered around the definition. Same with defining "woman" to mean "women and any man who says he is a woman based on a non-observable inner feeling knowable only through self-report in contradiction to his immutably sexed morphology, rooted in a billion years of evolution and stamped in every cell of his body." Any definition of what the man who claims to be a woman is defining himself as is necessarily circular, and thus fallacious. This is incredibly basic stuff that adults who pride themselves on their reasoning ability consider themselves sophisticated and advanced for having mentally handicapped themselves about in deference to the most viciously authoritarian social movement in modern times.

i don't think "right" and "wrong" are useful concepts when it comes to the social definitions of words. if enough people use a word in a certain way, it isn't wrong.

Dear the BBC News (UK). I see you forgot to add context to your clickbait again, so I'm here to help. Richard Tice is lying. The announcement was made on 25th March 2026 and states that it will apply from that date. NOT retrospective. NOT a change of rules. You're welcome.

Any right thinking person can recognise that the problem behaviour here is located behind the camera, not in front of it. The only sensible thing to do here is either step in front of the camera or remove it.
This is harassment of someone minding their own damn business. Absolutely unacceptable.

Some white children were throwing rocks at her as she walked home. She was a schoolteacher. So she did what a teacher does — she told them to stop. That night their parents came to her house and sh0t her. Elizabeth Lawrence. Birmingham, Alabama, 1933. She had spent her life teaching children. She corrected some children in the street. A mob came to her door for it. When her son Alexander tried to press for an investigation, they came back and burned the house down. He fled Birmingham and did not return. No one was charged. Her name appears in no textbook. We publish the massacres because they happened. But cases like this one are the ones that tell you how the system actually worked day to day — because the "offense" here is something a decent adult does automatically, without thinking, anywhere on earth. She told some kids to stop throwing rocks. That was enough

At Skede beach, the Einsatzgruppen massacred 2,700 Jews, nearly all women and children. SS officer Karl Strott took these photos as a memento. The boy on the far right, and likely most of the others in the first photo, including the baby in a dark shawl, are standing before the shooters in the second, seconds before they are shot. There’s a third photo showing them after they were shot, but I’m choosing not to include it.
