Reports of possible incident at Russia’s #Irkutsk Institute prompts me to re-up this @GovAIOrg report I wrote with Bhuvana Sudarshan. Safety failures are a persistent risk in the bio security landscape.

How will AI reshape chemical, biological, and nuclear risks and what to do about it? It’s nearly impossible to make progress if industry and government can’t get on the same page about the threats. My new piece in @WarOnTheRocks takes this on and proposes a path forward;

What a moment. My warmest congratulations to the United States and to everyone whose hard work and persistence brought this home.

With the certification of infrasound station IS54 at Palmer Station, Antarctica, the United States has completed its segment of the International Monitoring System (IMS). Reaching this point in one of the most remote and unforgiving places on Earth was no small undertaking, and we owe a great deal to the US, @doddtra and @uafairbanks for seeing it through.

A robust global nuclear security regime is essential. Any State could be affected by an act of nuclear terrorism, and a strong international legal framework is fundamental to preventing nuclear material from being used to cause harm.
Today, I addressed the Preparatory Committee for the 2027 Conference of the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material A/CPPNM - the only legally binding agreement in the area of physical protection of nuclear material and facilities. The work starts now to lay the foundations for a successful conference next April and ensure the Convention remains fit for purpose.

Always a pleasure to meet with @rafaelmgrossi at the @iaeaorg GC!
The IAEA continues to be asked to do more, without the required additional funding. This should be a priority for all governments.
Good to see @NTI_WMD President and CEO Christine Wormuth at #IAEAGC.
@IAEAorg and NTI have worked together for many years on nuclear security and non-proliferation, with important support from NTI for the IAEA LEU Bank.
Important exchange at #IAEAGC on these topics, as well as the renewed global interest in nuclear energy.

Excellent breakdown by @JDMenton on the US-Saudi nuclear agreement. Congress should make good use of the 90-day review period to satisfy themselves on the significant ambiguities and to attach legislation to shore up weaknesses.
After a dramatic rollout, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. are finally on the verge of a civil nuclear cooperation agreement.
But what does the deal entail? And what does it leave behind?
@JDMenton explains: carnegieendowment.org/emissa…
lawfaremedia.org/article/the… Timely and infuriating reminder of what the ongoing attacks on the federal national security community are costing them AND costing the nation, plus specific links to help for those affected. Thank you so much for this, Julia Curlee, and for your service.

Launched in 2026, the Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) will operate in collaboration with the @IMOHQ to develop an international framework for the safe, secure and safeguarded use of civilian maritime nuclear applications.
From nuclear-powered shipping to floating nuclear power plants that could provide low-carbon electricity for coastal and remote communities, ATLAS will help Member States explore innovative maritime applications while upholding the highest standards of nuclear safety, security and safeguards.

Important progress on longstanding open safeguards questions in #Syria. I hope this newfound openness from Syria allows for closure of these consequential questions and reducing regional proliferation risks. Bravo to @iaea and Syrian officials!
I’m currently in Syria, in the context of ongoing cooperation with the Syrian Government to clarify and resolve outstanding safeguards issues related to implementing its NPT Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA.
We conducted the following activities:
• Deir Ez-Zor site: observed ongoing excavation activities in close coordination with the IAEA;
• Undeclared location outside of Damascus: confirmed the presence of several tons of natural uranium metal. Agreed with the government that the undeclared material will be verified and subject to routine Agency safeguards;
• Visited a location where large quantities of graphite are stored which is also related to the past nuclear activities at Deir Ez-Zor.
Thanks to the government, including @syrianmofaex’s Foreign Minister @AsaadHShaibani, for the proactive cooperation on this crucial work so that nuclear activities in this country are no longer associated with nuclear weapons, but with energy, food, and health.

It can’t be stated enough: The tools and strategies the U.S. used to rely on to coerce Iran into a nuclear deal are now focused entirely on opening the Strait. A need that didn’t exist at all before the U.S. war.
