In some ways this film was sort of like The Shining (1980) if Jack Torrance had been a total jerkoff to everyone he encountered and not just to Wendy. There were many similarities, but no amount of them could make Hokum into a masterpiece. It was an okay film though.

They ain’t exactly the Grady Twins, but they’ll have to do. My final take is that this film spent more time praising its influences than creating great horror. For that matter, I’ll admit that I didn’t find it scary. I lost interest by the halfway point and never recovered it.

The Satanist understands that the secret to true immortality is to leave behind a legacy. With this in mind, I celebrate the life of Doktor Anton Szandor LaVey, who died on this day in 1997, but who shall live on forever. Many thanks to Mrs. Vasuri for the alluring artwork. ⚑️

In addition to the obvious similarities to Clockwork, it also shares quite a bit of DNA with James Cullen Bressack’s 2012 indie film, Hate Crime. Like that film, this one sought to shock the audience with brutality, but fell short of going as dark as that film did.

This film reminded me of the school bully who desperately wants all the students in his class to fear him so he menaces and threatens them, but he has to do it quietly because he’s afraid of getting caught by the teacher. It had neither balls nor budget to see things through.
