Legal tech founders have good reason to pay attention when Microsoft's Copilot for Legal brings legal AI into software their customers already use. Distribution and familiar workflows can make a powerful combination, especially when buyers start asking what an additional subscription really buys them. This Legaltech News (LTN) post explores the pressure on vendors to demonstrate value through specialized workflows, proprietary data, and more carefully tailored products. Cat Casey, president and co-founder of Intelligent AF, puts the pricing question this way: "'The layer that you, [as] the point solution, are servicing gets smaller—then it becomes, 'Is it worth X, Y or Z dollars for that incremental benefit?'" she said. 'Some of these licenses are quite expensive, and there's a lot of value for them, but if suddenly some of that value is embedded in your Microsoft 365 or your Copilot license, are you going to pay incrementally more?'" Min-Kyu Jung, co-founder and CEO of Ivo, emphasizes the need for differentiation: "'As recently as a year ago, vendors could be successful with products that were almost entirely undifferentiated from generic AI tools,' he noted. 'It’s more important than ever that vendors are providing value significantly above and beyond the underlying models themselves.'" Legaltech News (LTN) posts to report IP law firm Sterne Kessler’s partnership with Clarivate. For legal tech founders, this LTN post offers a useful example of turning law-firm experimentation into commercial products: Sterne Kessler brings workflow expertise and internal prototypes; Clarivate brings IP data, software, and the capacity to develop those prototypes at scale. From the LTN article, first quoting Clarivate president of IP Simon Webster and then quoting Sterne Kessler’s Robert Burger: "'They spend time understanding how they want to improve their practice, and then they prototype those solutions internally," Webster said of Sterne Kessler. "Going forward, that gives us not just a set of problems to solve and an indication of how they want them solved, but an actual prototype that we can then develop full-scale solutions from, with ... the level of provenance and trust and durability that the industry needs.'" "'We have our own [AI research and development] department, but we don't want to be in the software development business, so partnering with Clarivate allows us to have the best of all worlds,' Sterne Kessler chief operating officer and executive director Robert Burger said. 'Producing fiduciary-grade products is a lot, ... so being able to spin off a lot of our tools to them is the name of the game.'" CaseBlink’s latest rebuild reflects a broader ambition for legal AI: supporting the work surrounding a case, not just preparing forms and briefs. Khalil Zlaoui says the immigration-focused platform now brings teams and agents into a shared system of record. For legal tech founders, his account highlights how customer feedback can reshape both a product’s scope and the information its agents need. From Khalil Zlaoui’s LinkedIn post: “We started CaseBlink to make case prep faster. But hundreds of firms taught us the job goes far beyond forms and briefs: chasing documents, retyping facts, digging through notes, tracking expirations, priority dates and RFE deadlines, and keeping clients informed. The work never ends. Agents can now take on much of that work. But to do it well, they need the full picture.” “Over the past few months, we’ve rebuilt CaseBlink as a connected system of record, purpose-built for immigration. Your team and your agents work in one shared workspace, using the same information to move cases from intake to filing and beyond.” Read the entire LinkedIn post at this link: lnkd.in/p/ghvPb9GP #legaltechnology #legaltech

A post at Judge Scott Schlegel's {SCH]LEGAL TECH Substack (co-authored by Chief Judge Susan Chehardy, Louisiana Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal) discusses an ambitious program of AI-related building. Yes, you read that right - a court undertaking the development of AI tools around the work its employees actually do. As reported in the post, with two AI servers and an open-weight model, the court plans to begin with filing compliance and intake before exploring more demanding applications. Kudos to Louisiana's Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. From Judge Schlegel's Substack post: “The ALEA Institute [The Institute for the Advancement of Legal and Ethical AI] is leading the coding and development. We did not have all of the technical expertise to undertake a project like this ourselves, but our dedicated IT professionals have been working with ALEA for months and are learning quickly. It has been a tremendous learning experience for everyone, including the employees who are discovering how integral their everyday knowledge is in the design of a novel system. Instead of buying a ready-made product and rearranging the workflow around it, we are starting with the people who know the work and building outward.” “We are still at the beginning. The servers have been purchased, supporting infrastructure work has begun, employees have described their workflows, and ALEA has begun development. Some ideas will prove harder to implement than we expect, and some may turn out to be better handled by traditional software. We want to discover those things through testing, rather than mistake an impressive demonstration for a dependable court application.” Read the entire post at this link: judgeschlegel.substack.com/p… #legaltechnology #legaltech

As Bob Ambrogi's LawSites blog reports, legal tech vendor integrations continue apace, with Harvey connecting with legal research company Midpage. From the LawSites post: "A new connector announced today enables Harvey customers to access the AI legal research platform Midpage. "The connector makes Midpage’s research library of U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, and agency materials accessible from directly within Harvey, so lawyers can find and cite authority on the same platform they use for drafting and analysis." Artificial Lawyer (AL) posts about Legora’s partnership with Blue J, bringing specialist tax research into lawyers’ existing workflow. Requested by shared customers, the integration connects the two products through MCP and provides source-linked answers. Legora says the move serves lawyers handling tax matters, while maintaining its focus on the legal sector. From the AL post: “As to why they’re doing this, [Legora and Blue J] added: ‘Shared customers asked for this integration so they could access Blue J in the same place they already do the rest of their legal work. Blue J is built specifically for tax research and is used by more than 6,000 organizations globally.’” “And they also explained that: ‘The integration is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect Blue J’s tax research to the Legora aOS. Blue J performs the research on its own infrastructure. Users need subscriptions to both products and must sign in with their own accounts. Each answer includes inline citations linking to the underlying Blue J sources, subject to applicable content permissions. These citations allow lawyers to verify the reasoning before using it in advice or client deliverables.’” Read the entire AL post at this link (where you'll also find AL's thoughts about whether Legora's moving ". . . beyond legal work into audit, tax, compliance and risk"): artificiallawyer.com/2026/10… #legaltechnology #legaltech @WeAreLegora @ArtificialLawya

AI’s value to lawyers needn’t begin and end with saving time. In his most recent post at his Brainyacts blog/newsletter, Josh Kubicki describes a tool he built that interviews lawyers about their workflows not only to figure out how AI can be best slotted into those workflows, but also to uncover opportunities for better client service. His illustrative private-equity example offers legal tech founders a useful reminder: understanding the work can reveal opportunities beyond automating existing tasks. From the Brainyacts post: “[The tool I built] interviews a partner with the goal of deciphering different workflow candidates to focus on. It also looks for something most people are totally missing – alpha. Net new value. Something you could give clients that you cannot today because you did not think of it, don’t have time to do it, or never even thought about it.” “[The tool] is a service the partner’s clients might value more than the drafting itself: a record of each [private equity] sponsor’s own positions across their last twelve deals. Sponsor deal teams turn over, so their memory is often worse than the firm’s. Nobody on an AI committee would have found that. They’d still be asking which tasks to automate.” Read the entire Brainyacts post at this link: thebrainyacts.beehiiv.com/p/… #legaltechnology #legaltech @jkubicki

I remember talking to a senior Microsoft business person over drinks in NYC, oh, it must have been 25 years ago. When I asked why Microsoft didn't pay more attention to the legal market, the executive said the market was just too small to matter to a giant like his company. "Legal just doesn't move the needle," she put it. Well, now BigTech is paying more attention to building AI tooling for lawyers, as we read in a post from Legal IT Insider (LITI)i that Microsoft CoPilot is joining the ranks that Anthropic and OpenAI lead by introducing CoPilot for legal. From LITI's post: "In an announcement that will be viewed with interest by the in-house legal sector in particular, Microsoft today (15 October) announced Copilot for legal, with more than 20 purpose-built legal skills now available Copilot. In Word, the capabilities are said to support in-depth document analysis, drafting and revision, while Cowork helps legal professionals carry out broader, multi-step workflows across files and applications." You can read the entire LITI post here (and, when you're reading that post, take note of all the business partnerships that CoPilot has entered into with standalone legal tech vendors): legaltechnology.com/microsof… #legaltechnology #legaltech @LITI_News

As this post from Legaltech News (LTN) points out, law firms and in-house legal departments are formulating strategies for dealing with the switch by their legal tech vendors from per-seat pricing to consumption-based pricing for AI tool use. Legal tech companies should be prepared to meet the questions and challenges that those customer strategies will pose. From the LTN post: "On the user side, consumption pricing means less predictable AI costs, especially if law firms or in-house teams are experimenting with AI, have not figured out efficiencies of their AI use cases yet, are in the middle of building tools or are not tracking staff AI use at all." “'The core thing we need from the market, from the vendors, is both visibility of token burn, and then, just like our clients come to us and say we've got predictability and pricing, we need some form of predictability,' said Ben Allgrove, Baker McKenzie’s chief innovation officer. "He added that  a firm cannot just write a blank check or plan for the future if it’s not clear from the vendor how exactly their models differentiate or burn tokens for different tasks." Leon Johnson is joining Zurich-based Omnilex to lead its US business, bringing experience as a partner at Goodwin and Kirkland & Ellis. His move offers a useful lens on the AI-native law firm movement: Johnson’s skepticism about Big Law’s pyramid model is informed by his former mentor, Clayton Christensen, and the innovator’s dilemma. From the Artificial Lawyer post: “At Kirkland he helped build the Salt Lake City office to more than 100 lawyers and handled transactional work at Goodwin. However, he told Artificial Lawyer he just no longer believes the traditional Big Law pyramid model has a long-term future. Instead, Johnson said he wants to help develop a new approach, with the ‘new model’ as AL calls it, as the guiding blueprint for what he wants to build in America – and perhaps in the future in other markets, such as the UK." Read the entire Artificial Lawyer post at this link (including much more about Omnilex's origin and structure; all from an AL video interview with Johnson that's also available at the link below): artificiallawyer.com/2026/10… #legaltechnology #legaltech @ArtificialLawya

I'm quoting from the Artificial Lawyer (AL) post from today, October 14, 2026, when I say, "Hold on, another contract review tool? How is this different?" But yes, as AL reports, LawVu's contract review software is different. From the AL post: "Inhouse-focused LawVu has launched Lens, an AI contract analysis tool that gives lawyers visibility across a company’s ‘entire contract portfolio, surfacing risks and obligations before they become problems’. It’s all part of the New Zealand-based platform’s LegalOS operating system roll-out. "Now, you very likely will say: ‘Hold on, another contract review tool? How is this different?’ "Well, it’s good that you asked. The answer is this: Lens analyzes the entire contract portfolio at once. And of course, for some companies this could be quite a lot!" Only one day after arch-rival Legora announces its intake tool's launch for in-house legal, Harvey announces the release of its own such tool, as reported by Artificial Lawyer (AL). From AL's post: "Harvey has launched Intake, its new legal front door for the inhouse world, which not only helps to funnel contracts to the right lawyers, but also helps perform an initial first-pass review via its agents of any incoming work. Early access will begin this month. "Now, for those with great memories, you’ll probably have noted that Legora also launched an inhouse legal front door… yesterday, also branded as Intake. Great minds think alike, as they say."
