I was thinking something like this this morning...
🚨WHAT IF WE HAD....
"THE GAMERS' CODE OF CONDUCT"
Big corpos gave us their terms..... But have we ever given them ours?
A Public Notice to Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Every Corporation That Forgot Who Pays the Bills.
Dear Corporate Executives,
For years, you've buried gamers under Terms of Service, Codes of Conduct, and enough fine print to wallpaper your boardrooms.
You've dictated what we can say, do, and under what circumstances you can revoke access to products we've paid for.
How thoughtful. Now it's our turn.
ARTICLE 1-RESPECT YOUR CUSTOMERS.
Gamers are not walking credit cards or recurring revenue opportunities.
We understand this may require cultural adjustments.
ARTICLE 2-PURCHASES ARE NOT RENTALS.
If you advertise a purchase, provide meaningful, lasting access. If it's a revocable license, say so before taking payment.
Transparency. What a revolutionary concept.
ARTICLE 3-CHOICE IS NOT A SECURITY VULNERABILITY.
Physical games, digital downloads, and competing retailers should coexist.
Removing choices and calling it innovation doesn't make it innovative.
ARTICLE 4-CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY.
Make a mistake? Admit it, explain it, and fix it.👈
Blaming customers or hiding behind automated responses won't cut it.
ARTICLE 5-NO UNAUTHORIZED WALLET EXTRACTIONS.
Microtransactions, subscriptions, battle passes, and DLC must be presented honestly.
A $70-100 game shouldn't feel like admission to a shopping mall.
ARTICLE 6-PRESERVE GAMING HISTORY.
Consumers deserve reasonable ways to preserve legally acquired games when official support ends.
Gaming history belongs to future generations, not a corporate vault awaiting another remaster.
ARTICLE 7-SPEAK PLAIN ENGLISH.
Enough "strategic realignment" and "enhancing consumer experiences."
Raising prices? Say so. Removing features? Admit it.
We're gamers, not idiots.
ARTICLE 8-LOYALTY IS EARNED.
Twenty years of supporting your company doesn't obligate us to finance your next twenty bad decisions.
Brand loyalty isn't a lifetime financial commitment.
ARTICLE 9-CORPORATE PENALTIES.
First offense: Public criticism and demands for correction.
Second offense: Canceled subscriptions and withheld purchases.
Repeated offenses: Permanent removal from our shopping lists.
Unlike some enforcement systems, we'll explain why.
ARTICLE 10-FINAL AUTHORITY.
Corporations may appeal through meaningful improvements.
Scripted apologies and promises to "do better" without action will be rejected.
Consumers reserve the right to take their money elsewhere.
FINAL NOTICE TO CORPORATE LEADERSHIP
You have your Code of Conduct.
Now we have ours.
You can suspend our accounts, but you cannot force us to open our wallets.
You control your platforms.
"WE CONTROL OUR PURCHASING DECISIONS."
And no Terms of Service can take that power away.
Sincerely,
The Gamers Who Actually Pay the Bills.
What would you add as Article 11?

US Representative Ritchie Torres from New York City announced that he will introduce the “Power To The Players Act” citing that digital video games are a rental disguises as a sale🚀
He explained: "When you pay for a game, you should own it.
Consumers must have the right to own, the right to play, and the right to transfer the games they buy.
A game that can be taken away the moment a company pulls the plug is not a purchase. It is a rental disguised as a sale.”
If it is passed into law, the bill will protect our ability to own and play purchased games.

It’s about time the firm hand of the law took a stand towards the normalized exploitation of gamers under the excuse of “the company has the right to revoke access at any time for any reason without compensation” and actually preserved players’ rights to own the games they buy, and to be compensated in case said game was removed or account was disabled.
There can never be full trust in digital games when you aren’t even able to own what you’re buying.
In any case, physical media must be preserved, because it will always be the only and most reliable way to play games and have agency over their usage, and they must contain the ENTIRE game, whether on one disc and four even.

playstation charged me for an mlb trial, refused to resolve it with me after multiple attempts and suspended my entire account when my credit card company sided with me. this is exactly why physical media matters. imagine having hundreds of games locked behind an account because you disputed one charge. you paid for those games, but sony still controls whether you can access them. that’s fucking ridiculous. i’ve never been happier to have sold my ps5, and sony can kiss my ass!

Lamenting the fact that this Sony is long gone and whatever we have now is a shell of what is once was, and if this current version of Sony existed in the 1990s and 00s, the company would not exist today🚀
Everything they’re doing now, it’s full of hatred for gamers and creativity.
People really need to wake up and get over valuing this company out of loyalty for an image from 2 decades ago.

Going back to refuting bad faith arguments against physical media, and false narratives passed on by Sony and the industry, with new info and statements🚀
🗣️“You just want physical games for nostalgia”
✅Physical games represent:
A) Ownership
B) Competitive pricing
C) Second hand market & trading
D) No reliance on networks & internet
E) Not tied to a user account
F) Playable worldwide without region lock
G) Collectible value
🗣️“85% of players buy digital”
✅15% or even 5% in this industry is still millions of people bringing in hundreds of millions of not billions o revenue.
✅Statistics have also shown us that in the UK, France, Japan and Australia, physical game sales go higher than %40 and %50 for games like Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
✅PlayStation’s Wolverine reportedly sold 35% physical in the US & 51% physical in Europe
🗣️“Nobody buys physical games”
✅Several physical games go out of stock for weeks, or ship with a disc that requires downloading more.
✅Physical games don’t lack interest, they lack genuine support.
✅The industry appears to calculate DLC, microtransactions, digital only games and free to play as “digital purchases” which heavily inflates the number of digital games against physical media
🗣️“Netflix and Spotify ended movie and music Blu-Rays and CDs”
✅Movies are still being sold on Blu-Ray and 4K UHD
✅Music still comes to CDs, vinyl and even cassette tapes that actually work
✅Artists use variants of the same vinyl and/or CD to boost sales for how much in demand they
✅PlayStation and Rockstar continue to release their game soundtracks on vinyl multiple vinyl variants, and GTA6 soundtrack is coming to vinyl with liquid inside and 8 other variants along with CDs
✅Despite music being far smaller as files and much more accessible and less demanding than video games which can go over 100GB, digital and streaming did not end physical media
🗣️“It’s expensive to make games on disc”
✅Games will be more expensive if an all digital future is implemented.
✅You will pay the same price for a glorified rental that can be taken any time due to licensing agreements or account loss/suspension.
✅With the absence of competition, regional and dynamic pricing, games can be more expensive than ever
✅Second hand market gives players an option to get games cheaper and keeps the market/pricing in check
🗣️“This is fear-mongering! Sony would never take away your digital games. It never happened to me”
✅It happens to so many people, like the 500 movies that Sony removed from users libraries and many games that come and go regardless of how much you paid for them
✅Buying only a license without a copyright physical component that guarantees ownership could mean you lose the game if your account was hack or suspended, licenses expired or any issues happened with the network
🗣️“Opposing physical media is not a thing. It’s only a niche crying about them online”
✅The outrage extended not only to gaming media but to mainstream media in general, with many celebrities and corporations expressing disdain and ridicule towards Sony
✅Various industry legends including Hideo Kojima, Shawn Layden, Dan Houser, SEGA, Yoko Taro and many others expressed disagreement with the decision citing that physical media is important for ownership, collectible value among other things
✅Digital Foundry’s John Linneman stated that various studios and publishers told him there’s resentment within the industry towards Sony
✅Sony is reportedly surveying creators about how they feel about physical media
✅NYU business professor and gaming analyst Joost van Dreunen gave a statement:
“People have a need to collect.
That’s where physical sales are still incredibly relevant for the consumer market. The industry is ready to move on, but not so fast. This is increasingly a big part of it.”
✅They hold sentimental value to players and collectors, and that is a big market
