Cloud Nothings have been among the most consistent forces on the indie rock landscape. These days, they record for Pure Noise, a label with deep roots in post-hardcore, and the band’s forthcoming ninth album leans fully into heavier music. ‘What Kind Of Hell Did You Survive?,’ produced by Seth Manchester (Lightning Bolt, The Body), arrives Jan. 29.
If you’ve heard Cloud Nothings’ 2012 classic ‘Attack On Memory,’ you know they can get heavy, but it’s fun to hear them shift into an even more ferocious gear without losing their personality on lead single “Death Keeps Me Alive.” It’s a vaguely doomy riff-monster that even veers into black metal territory toward the end.
‘What Kind Of Hell Did You Survive?’ deals with “cruel governments, the importance of community, and occasionally a general rage at the state of the world,” says vocalist/guitarist Dylan Baldi.
“Death Keeps Me Alive” tops Stereogum’s latest 5 Best Songs Of The Week countdown, and you can check out its Alex Scalzo-Brown-directed video and the rest of this week’s picks at the site. Baldi will play Columbus on Halloween with Sad13 before taking Cloud Nothings to the UK, Spain, and Portugal next month.

Really great review of the new @sadurn__ album! out now from @rfcrecords
Against all odds, Sadurn return with 'The Underworld,' a quietly stunning sophomore album dispatched from the deepest trenches of heartache.
