Shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and injuries at CFB Wainwright in Alberta.
Our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. We pray for the recovery of those injured and for strength for everyone affected by this horrific tragedy.
We have enormous respect and gratitude for the men and women of the Canadian Army and all those who serve in our @CanadianForces. Our hearts go out to the entire military community at this heartbreaking time. 🇨🇦
Three years ago today, the world changed.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists invaded Israel. They murdered more than 1,200 people, including children, and kidnapped hundreds more. The brutality of that day and the unimaginable loss inflicted on so many families will never be forgotten.
In 2024, I visited the Nova site. Standing among the memorials to so many young lives stolen that morning is something I will never forget.
Three years later, we remember those who were murdered and the families forever changed. We remember the courage of those who ran toward danger to save others. And we remember how quickly, even before Israel had buried its dead, hatred against Jews erupted around the world, including right here in Canada.
October 7 was the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Three years later, its impact is still being felt in Israel and by Jewish communities everywhere.
Today, we remember the victims and stand with their families, the survivors and the people of Israel.
May the memory of all those murdered on October 7 forever be a blessing.
Am Yisrael Chai. 🇮🇱💙

Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd confirmed today that Sunday night’s shooting outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue was a hate-motivated crime, stating: “Make no mistake, this was a targeted attack against the Jewish community.” Police say the gunman yelled, “you’re going to die for the Jews” before opening fire on Constable Jeff Smith.
The attack unfolded as members of Belleville’s Jewish community gathered for Kol Nidre services on Yom Kippur. Constable Smith, who was stationed outside the synagogue, was shot multiple times but continued to engage the attacker. Less than three minutes later, Constable Michael McCurdy arrived and immediately moved toward the danger.
Chief Rodd said the actions of both officers prevented what could have become an “unimaginable tragedy.”
Constable Jeff Smith and Constable Michael McCurdy are heroes. They put themselves directly in harm’s way and stopped an armed attacker outside a synagogue filled with Jewish worshippers on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. We are profoundly grateful for their courage and continue to pray for Constable Smith, as he remains in critical condition.
This is where we are in Canada. Every Canadian should be shaken to their core by this.
FSWC statement on #Belleville synagogue shooting:
"This is not a wake-up call. Canadian Jews are sadly wide awake. We know the fear that now comes with gathering openly as Jews, whether at a synagogue, a school or a community centre. We live with it every day."

Horrifying news from Belleville, Ontario. A police officer was shot while protecting a synagogue during Kol Nidre services, as bullets pierced its stained-glass window.
This is not a wake-up call. Canadian Jews are sadly wide awake.
This is the reality of Jewish life in Canada today. None of us, Jewish or not, must accept it as normal.

Today, we mark the yahrzeit of Simon Wiesenthal.
A survivor of Nazi persecution, Wiesenthal devoted the decades after his liberation from Mauthausen to documenting Nazi crimes and helping bring perpetrators to justice.
SWC proudly carries his name and continues his legacy in the fight against antisemitism and all forms of hate.

EXCLUSIVE: Canada has awarded millions worth of contracts to an Edmonton resident who is the son of Iran's former VP, and is under investigation for allegedly helping the regime build its missile program & evade sanctions. globalnews.ca/news/12040736/…
As a former MP, I find the attack outside MP Salma Zahid’s home chilling and deplorable. I’m relieved that she and her family are safe.
Police must fully investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
This is utterly reprehensible.
Overnight, two locations of Kiva’s Bagel Bakery, a beloved Toronto institution, cherished by the Jewish community and so many others across our city, were targeted, including one where police say a window was struck by gunfire. Toronto Police are investigating these incidents as suspected hate-motivated offences.
After nearly three years of escalating antisemitism targeting Jewish schools, synagogues, businesses and community institutions in Toronto and across Canada, incidents like these deepen fear and reinforce why so many in our community feel increasingly vulnerable.
Condemnations are not enough. The Jewish community needs more than expressions of concern. It needs results. Those responsible must be identified, arrested, prosecuted and held fully accountable. Every Torontonian deserves to feel safe living, working and gathering in our city.

FSWC welcomes the Inspector General’s leadership in issuing these important recommendations for strengthening police responses to hate crimes against the Jewish community, and appreciates the collaborative process that helped inform it, including the June 15 meeting with community organizations and policing leaders.
Addressing antisemitic and hate-motivated incidents takes the same kind of teamwork we saw in that discussion. We want to acknowledge the many organizations and police leaders who helped shape this work, and we’re ready to support implementation with evidence-based education, practical training and strong partnerships – drawing on FSWC’s long history of operational police training across Ontario.
My latest @TorontoStar column reflects on what I learned as Chair of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee after years of hearing the testimony of victims of the Iranian regime.
Their stories led me to one conclusion: Canada should not re-engage with the Iranian regime. We should stand with the people of Iran, not those who oppress them.
As I write in the column:
“There is an important difference between engaging with the people of Iran and legitimizing the government that oppresses them. Canada should continue to support the former while remaining clear-eyed about the latter.”

Today, we celebrated Holocaust survivor, educator, author and beloved member of our community, Hedy Bohm- the park on Tichester, just east of Bathurst, is now named in her honour.
Children will play here, families will gather, and for years to come we will all learn about this courageous woman, and her lessons of resilience and kindness. As a Jewish woman who experienced the horrors of the Shoah, Hedy took a stand against antisemitism, and all forms of intolerance and hate. She also continues to remind us to be kind and take care of each other.
I’m so deeply happy that Hedy was here with her family, friends and neighbours today to see how much we love and admire her.

We are saddened by the tragic death of Toronto Police Service Constable Marc Pinizzotto, who was killed in the line of duty today. Constable Pinizzotto served the people of Toronto for 18 years, including five years as a member of the Emergency Task Force.
As Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw said, “They are grieving a profound loss.” Today, that loss is felt far beyond his family and colleagues. It is felt across our city by all who value the courage and sacrifice of those who serve and protect. As the Toronto Police Service has rightly said, Constable Pinizzotto was “a hero in life, not death.”
Michael Levitt, President and CEO of FSWC, said: “Constable Marc Pinizzotto dedicated his life to protecting the people of Toronto. His tragic death in the line of duty is a heartbreaking loss for his family, his colleagues and our entire city. We honour his courage, commitment and sacrifice, and extend our deepest condolences to all those mourning his loss. May his memory forever be a blessing.”
It is with deep and profound sorrow that we announce and mourn the loss of PC Marc Pinizzotto, 43, of our Emergency Task Force, killed in the line of duty today.
Marc devoted 18 years to serving the people of Toronto, including 5 years with ETF. He was a courageous officer, a respected colleague, and a man who put others before himself.
Today, a police family has lost their loved one, and our Service has lost a brother. The grief is immeasurable.
Our hearts are with Marc’s family, his loved ones, and his ETF teammates. Our members will stand with them, now and always.
A hero in life.

Through the tireless work of our Counter-Terrorism Security Unit, we investigated, gathered evidence, and received AG consent to lay charges for Wilful Promotion of Hatred. This is an example of what we mean when we say that investigations continue and arrests can come at any time after an incident. We will continue to be relentless in following the evidence to hold those who commit criminal acts of hate accountable.
Five additional arrests made for Wilful Promotion of Hatred at March 15, 2026, demonstration.

I’m overjoyed by the news that Esti has been found safe nearly two weeks after going missing near Earl Bales Park in Toronto.
It has been incredibly moving to witness the extraordinary outpouring of support from people across our community and from those who came from near and far to help search, share information and bring her home. Thank you as well to the @TorontoPolice for their tireless investigation and extraordinary efforts throughout this search.
Most importantly, I’m deeply relieved that Esti has been found safe. 🙏
