Fun fact: the world’s fastest land animal can’t roar. It purrs! 🐆
Cheetahs have a fully ossified hyoid: a tiny throat bone that has turned to solid bone. Lions and leopards have a more flexible one for roaring. The cheetah’s design is purr-fect for purring. 😸
In 1960, Africa had up to 100,000 black rhinos.
Then poaching tore through them. By 1970: about 65,000. By the 1990s, just 2,300.
A species that once filled the savanna was pushed to the very edge.
But the story doesn’t end there. 🧵
The latest count, per the @RhinosIRF ‘State of the Rhino’ 2026 report, is 6,788 black rhinos across 12 African countries, almost triple the lowest point.
Fun Fact: Kenya is home to the largest population of Eastern black rhinos in the world. 🇰🇪
Thank you to the government, communities, donors and partners who have made this possible. Asanteni sana!

Every sighting logged and every moment spent observing adds key data that helps track endangered species, monitor environmental shifts, and protect our natural heritage.
On Tuesday, as a herd moved through Lewa, we noticed an elephant in distress. A thick snare had cut deep into her trunk. 🐘
Alongside @KWSKenya, our team tracked her, safely immobilised her, removed the snare, treated her wound, and reunited her with her herd.
Elvis and Kitui are two of Lewa’s best-loved conservation success stories: hand-raised and fully rewilded. But before Elvis and Kitui, there was Mawingo, their mother.
Thread:
Those calves would eventually find new homes across some of Kenya’s most important rhino landscapes.
Elvis stayed on the Lewa-Borana landscape. Kitui was rewilded and moved to Segera. Omni went to community-owned Il Ngwesi, and Lola to Ol Pejeta.
Education changes everything. Across 28 supported schools, the Lewa Education Programme is transforming outcomes for thousands of young learners, giving them the foundation they need to succeed and lead.
