I’m no economist, but Netflix lost $18 billion in value yesterday, enough to fund every ask the writers and actors made for 36 years
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Netflix stock is down because of its underwhelming earnings report. The $18B change in stock value could not have been realized by the company to pay the writers as it is independent of the company’s financials. cnbc.com/amp/2023/07/20…

If you were a Barbie, what two or three accessories would you come with?

This headline isn’t accurate. SAG-AFTRA aren’t granting “waivers”. What they’re doing is allowing productions not connected with the AMPTP to film if they agree to all the stipulations in our requests. If smaller producers can afford it, so can Disney. indiewire.com/news/breaking-…

My adult son works at the industry leading camera/lens company in Hollywood. He’s been there 5 years and has worked his way up to being a vital part of the team that works with camera crews and is now a member of his local 600 (camera union)

Neither the WGA or SAG-AFTRA is calling for a consumer boycott right now. If you want to support the strike, we're asking folks to: 1) Boost our message on social media 2) Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund, which supports affected workers secure2.convio.net/afa/site/…
Replying to @adamconover
@adamconover genuine question: I'm having a hard time morally resolving whether I should skip seeing Barbie and Oppenheimer this week re: SAG/AFTRA solidarity. Thoughts?

Some of the discourse around the #SAGstrike reminds me of an assumption about actors that I've come across for most of my life. Many people seem to assume that there are ONLY TWO kinds of actors: 1. Wildly famous, rich celebrities 2. Failed pretenders who are actually servers 1/

People think actors are all rich. We are not. I rent my home + had to close my savings accounts on Monday to consolidate $ so I could pay my rent. No retirement funds, a kid in college, etc... and I'm one of the lucky ones! #ActingIsNotAHobby #SAGAFTRAstrong

The greed is almost a legendary comic trope - one fun fact - when I was a youngin- I did a film (with a boom box ) and somehow I got points - net not gross. Never expected to see any money - but the film became quite famous - so about 10 years ago - I looked again at the financial statements they were obligated to report - and to my shock - they claimed they had LOST 44 million dollars on the film - I thought wow , I almost bankrupted Fox! ( not really ) The film cost about 13 million to make - and money spent to release was minimal at the time - 30 years in - that film lost millions every year ! A neat accounting trick don’t ya think ?
SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher slams Hollywood execs: 'They plead poverty, that they’re losing money left and right, when giving hundreds of millions of dollars to their CEOs. It is disgusting — shame on them.'

This is a painful chapter in the lives of artists everywhere. Most actors & creatives don’t make millions. Many who make magic on-screen struggle to make ends meet. It’s easy to take this for granted at the top. We can’t have art w/o a sustainable future for artists. #SAGAFTRA

For the record I call out Carol Lombardini as culpable for the LA economy about to suffer losses to the tune of 20-30 million a day. (Figure not confirmed). Her sole job is to negotiate a deal between her AMPTP old white boys and the unions. She has failed miserably.
