For those asking for links to some of my past Twitter threads & livetweets on BC issues, here's a selection: 1. Fracking quakes cracked a major BC dam in Northeast BC not far from #SiteC, the #PeaceCanyon dam, & the BC gov't covered it up. Jan 2020: xitter.cf/Lidsville/status/12152…
BREAKING: One of BC's major dams, the Peace Canyon dam upstream of #SiteC, was compromised by fracking quakes but the info was not made public. More stories to follow - here's the initial release in CCPA's Policy Note by journalist @BenParfittCCPA. Stay tuned for more. #bcpoli

No Canadian east of BC knows anything about BC. Mr. Frum should know full well that the (poorly named) BC Liberals were a fully conservative government, and were in power a mere 9 years ago.
Canadian province of British Columbia just elected a Conservative government for first time in decades. Here's part of the story why, me in the @theAtlantic from 2025 theatlantic.com/internationa…

Huge news for Latin America, and the world: Lula da Silva has won reelection in Brazil, despite blatant electoral meddling by the US. Brazil is the biggest country in Latin America, a major geopolitical power, and a founding member of BRICS. The US empire wanted to put back in power the corrupt, far-right Bolsonaro dynasty, which is extremely pro-US and pro-Israel. The Bolsonaros vowed to minimize Brazil's role in BRICS, serve the interests of Brazilian oligarchs and big landlords at the expense of the working class, uphold the global US dollar system, and let US corporations plunder Brazil's natural resources -- especially its rare earths and critical minerals, which the US wants to reduce its reliance on China. In contrast, Lula comes from a poor family and has always put the interests of the working class first. He has a non-aligned foreign policy, 100% supports Palestine, strongly believes in the importance of Global South integration and cooperation, and was a co-founder of BRICS. Lula will deepen Brazil's partnership with China and the rest of the Global South. He will also continue to push for the transformation of the international financial system and will challenge the global dominance of the US dollar, which infuriates Washington.

One big consolation today is that Brazil defeated the fascist. It looked like Bolsonaro Jr. had beaten Lula, partly through right-wing mayors interrupting transit to the polls, but youthquake/working class protests turned it around and Lula has won!

Eby lost this election through multiple egregious mistakes, arrogance & lack of political skill. But we also need to see his catastrophic loss as proof of what happens when "progressives" swing to the right. Eby is not the first centrist to be shown this. #bcpoli

Glad we're seeing some consensus on this obvious fact xitter.cf/christoaivalis/status/…
You can't blame this loss on Green 'vote splitting' 1. The BC NDP called the early election, so that's 100% on them 2. The Greens support Proportional Representation, so they actually want to fix this system 3. The ONLY vote splits in recent memory were right-wing Liberals splitting the vote in 2011 Federally, and in 2018-2024 Ontario. 4. The BC CON win was so big, even a collapsed Green vote wouldn't have mattered. The left doesn't split votes: Liberals do, and moderates are the ones who elect right-wing governments.

Now I'm seeing the argument that the numbers show it was less voters staying home than it was vote-switchers. Time will tell, but I suspect this is off. However, if true, then more NDP voters switched to the Cons than to the Greens which counters the current NDP narrative

Photo from Reddit. White nationalists just outside the BC Legislature this morning after a BC Cons supermajority. This group is Loyalist Pioneers, a white nationalist organization virtually identical to Second Sons. They've been active around Victoria for about a year & a half.

Ladies and Gentlemen: First Past the Post. And low voter turnout like last night's is a feature of First Past the Post. People show up to vote in far higher numbers under Pro Rep because their vote directly results in representation in govt. Under FPTP, most votes are pointless.
CORRECTION the voter turnout was around 48% which means around 24% of BCers voted these toxic shitheads in.

Best description I've heard in a long time of the specific brand of fauxgressive neoliberal that Eby was. And the NDP are definitely Establishment Dem-coded, but with a kind of weird labour veneer.
Crazy thing about Eby is that he literally didn't have to do ANY of this shit. Heard him described as constantly searching for things to Pragmatically Sacrifice. His staff is a hot mess of rando lawyers giving shitty advice. Most Democrat-coded Canadian politician I've ever seen.

Voter turnout was low (est. 48%, ~ 10% drop). The Cons did extremely well. Greens are up from their low in 2024, but at 11% are still within historical norms (8-15%). What changed? I doubt all those NDP votes switched to Con. I'm guessing low turnout = NDP voters staying home

Now that polls are closed... WTH was Eby thinking when he asked Green voters to vote NDP to keep out Cons? You want them? You offer them an incentive beyond fearmongering. You could have courted them all along with good policy. And lost that condescension to Emily Lowan.

However it was interesting to see Brenda Bailey (who's doing CBC commentary tonight) refuse to rule out pro rep and admit there are problems with FPTP She said the usual "Pro Rep is more volatile" but if you want to look at the volatility of FPTP, look at the UK & US
