We need to have a discussion about “assessment load” in education. People are assigning too much work for learners and it is too much marking for instructors. We need to address how to be smart when designing assessments to restore balance, well-being, & space for relationality.
Highly recommend book, 'UNgrading' from @SusanDebraBlum & educators as impactful + honest look at foundations, practices + reflections (K12 + higher ed) of rethinking pedagogies + assessmt practices that don't encourage meaningful learning #ungrading #assessment #learning
Ungrading, separating grades from feedback, reducing emphasis on grades etc - as T+L developer been encouraging faculty for yrs - report increased enjoyment of teaching, +'ve buy-in from students. Have my own 'fan' page of collected stories teachanywhere.opened.ca/prac…
Biggest book takeaways: 1. we need to do more metacognitive teaching with students, more learning about learning 2. ungrading is not easy, may take many tries, may result in more work 3. there is not one single way to do it 4. Students need to be part of the change. #ungrading
