TWIK Episode 8 is out! 🎥✨ Have you ever wondered how devices get IP addresses and use them to communicate over a network or the internet? In today’s episode, I broke down IP addresses in simple words and demonstrated how to inspect network configuration using ipconfig. 📌 What I covered: - What IP addresses are and why we need them - The difference between IPv4 and IPv6 - Public vs. private IP addresses - Static vs. dynamic IP addresses - How DHCP assigns IP addresses and other network settings - How subnet masks help identify local and remote networks - The role of the default gateway - What ARP means and how it helps devices find MAC addresses Expert claims ❌ Clarity ✅ #softwaredevelopment #softwareengineering #tech #backenddeveloper #Networking #IPAddress

As a growing backend software engineer, I struggled to understand how things work behind the scenes because I often started from the wrong side. Now, when learning a new technology, feature, or functionality, I approach it in two versions. Version 1: Using it What is it? -> Why should I use it? -> How do I use it? Version 2: Understanding it What components or requirements does it depend on? -> How are they related? -> What happens behind the scenes? Most of us stop at Version 1 to get the job done.

Pagination and Caching Imagine an API returning 100,000 records in a single response. That’s a lot of data to retrieve, process, and send to a client. Pagination solves this by breaking the records into smaller, manageable pages. But what happens when a client repeatedly requests the same page? That’s where caching comes in. Instead of repeating the same database retrieval and data processing, we can temporarily store the result and reuse it for subsequent requests. Pagination helps manage data retrieval. Caching helps avoid repeated work. Both can improve API performance when implemented correctly. #BackendEngineering #Django #APIs

Not every problem needs a complex solution. Sometimes, good engineering means knowing what NOT to build. It’s easy to introduce abstractions, add layers, and make a system look sophisticated. The real challenge is knowing whether those decisions solve an actual problem or create unnecessary complexity. Good engineering isn’t about writing more code. It’s about making better decisions. #BackendEngineering #SoftwareEngineering

Now that almost every tech company has embraced AI as a necessity, the pressure to keep up with AI tools is becoming another distraction from learning as a developer. Someone tweeted “If you’re a developer and not using AI, you don’t know what you’re doing, except you’re learning.” Who doesn’t learn? lol

Behind-the-scenes implementation can be difficult to understand. That’s why I started TWIK (Teaching What I Know) episodes: to break technical jargon into simple words as a backend engineer. Backend engineering involves working with abstractions. You interact with interfaces, send requests, and expect things to work. But what happens when things break or slow down? You need to understand what’s happening underneath to investigate and fix the problem. Since I started these episodes, I’ve been learning more because I have to understand what I teach. I started with the fundamentals, and there are still more episodes to come.

Hashicorp Vault service is kinda boring to manage (free edition). Spent some minutes finding unseal key and root token just because I restarted the service. The credentials are not the issue here, it’s the lack of experience that will determine. The first time I started using it, it was hell! Everywhere good now, lol

Protect your space. Protect your peace. Protect your focus. Protect your decision-making with God’s guidance. Protect yourself. Very important.

TWIK Episode 7 is out! 🎥✨ Have you ever wondered how to find out which DNS server your computer uses and how a domain name resolves to an IP address? In today’s episode, I broke down DNS in simple words and added a simple practical demonstration at the end 📌 What I covered: - What DNS is and why we need it - What Domain Name Space is - How DNS resolution works - The difference between recursive DNS resolvers and authoritative DNS servers - The difference between the Stub resolver and DNS resolver - How DNS records help resolve domain names - How to inspect DNS resolution using CMD and Google Admin Toolbox I also demonstrated the practical side so you can see these concepts in action. The effects of procrastination are; 1. Loss of time: since procrastination means avoiding to process or complete tasks, the day might end up being unproductive. 2. Loss of goals: the procrastinated tasks will impact the goals set to be accomplished and can be detrimental. 3. Lack of self-esteem: not being able to complete tasks or accomplish goals can be frustrating and make one develop low self-esteem in a way that “this and that are not meant for me”, you might start developing negative feelings about your abilities to accomplish your goals or mental factors such as anger and depression. 4. Stress: worrying too much about starting multiple procrastinated tasks in due time which can result to poor performance in each task.
The reasons behind procrastination that some of us don’t know are; 1. Lack of energy: this may be due to illness, discomfort, or stress. 2. Lack of focus: this may be due to distractions, overwhelming tasks (having so much to do at the same time), mental fatigue, or being disorganized. 3. Lack of failure: this is not very common to notice because most of us lie to ourselves about this. When we fail at a task, the fear to make us appear incompetent to others or ourselves and avoid being psychologically uncomfortable can become worrisome. We then say that “it’s not for me”. Failure is to let us know where we are getting things wrong not that we’re incapable of doing them to succeed. We should definitely assess the situations or causes and address them.

Strategies for psyching ourselves out and managing procrastination; 1. Get organized: use time and project management strategies such as schedules, goal settings and other techniques. Breaking complex tasks into smaller tasks and prioritize. 2. Put aside distractions: distractions are time-killers and are the primary way people procrastinate. Putting aside distraction is one of the primary functions of setting priorities. 3. Be accountable: holding ourselves accountable by telling someone, writing it down on the wall we face every single time, or posting it on the internet. This is not to seek approval but to put our mind on the goals and take responsibility for our decisions. 4. Reward yourself: rewarding oneself after every accomplished goal is a motivational medicine to do more.

Depends on the workload. For CPU, I’d prioritize it for computationally intensive tasks like complex calculations, data processing, and CPU-heavy workloads. For RAM, I’d prioritize it for memory-intensive tasks like running multiple applications or processes simultaneously, handling large datasets in memory, and workloads that require a lot of memory to operate efficiently.
Developer's, More RAM or better CPU?

Day 2 of your backend journey, and you’re already talking about Node.js? I checked your profile and saw that you’re a frontend developer, so the fundamentals and other crucial aspects of software development may not be entirely new to you. Maybe you mean day 2 of learning Node.js? I think that distinction matters because someone new to software engineering might get the wrong idea. A backend journey doesn’t start with a programming language. There are fundamentals to understand first.
DAY-2 of My Backend Journey in Public. Today, I covered Modules & Global Objects in Node.js. I learnt that if we want to import data from one file into another, we can use the require keyword. However, we cannot directly access variables and functions from another file. To share data between files, we have to export the required variables and functions from one file and import them into another by storing the imported information in a variable. Another concept I learnt is Global Objects. As we know, in JavaScript, we have the window object, which is a global object provided by the browser not by the V8 Engine. In Node.js, the global object serves a similar purpose to the window object in the browser. The global object is not a part of the V8 Engine; it is a feature provided by Node.js. We also have global This, which is the standard way to refer to the global object in any JavaScript environment. Thankyou @namastedev_ for the wonderful Explanation Your explanations never made me feel like I was a non-techie. Wow, sir! You explain even the fundamentals so well!✅
