Scientists from our Department 'Living Matter Physics' developed a new model on organization of matter: non-reciprocal interactions play an important role in creating structures on a higher level - and eventually in the formation of life. @LivMatPhys

🦠🧫 @Cbehav @UniKonstanz

Hot off the press: In a collaboration between Stefan Karpitschka's group and several people from @LivMatPhys, we show how filament motility, reversals at illumination boundaries and filament interactions work together to create emergent structures. @Lei_La_ @RGolestanian @mpids
Kurjahn et al. show that filamentous #cyanobacteria use light gradients and boundary curvature of light stimuli to form to form ordered, entangled #aggregates, revealing how these dynamics could influence adaptive colony architectures #microorganisms nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

New paper w/ @MikeChatzittofi @RGolestanian! When the precision of a molecular machine is too good to be true, it could be that there is not a single machine but a whole team behind it. Stochastic thermodynamics helps us infer how big the team is, and how strongly it cooperates.

Applied mechanical forces can reduce the energy barrier in the reaction free energy. This and many other results in our nonlinear response theory of molecular machines with @RGolestanian and @AgudoCanalejo @LivMatPhys @mpids @ucl. Just Published in EPL.

Chemical activity, chemotaxis & steric repulsion work together to create complex dynamics in clusters of colloids/enzymes. @krprathyusha, @SahaSuropriya & @RGolestanian from @LivMatPhys analyze fluctuations & glassy behavior in this new paper. @PhysRevLett doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.…
… always great to see majority women-authored papers in (especially theoretical) physics. Hopefully LMP @LivMatPhys will contribute more in the future. #womeninSTEM

Being stuck in a local energy minimum 🪫 - this is a common problem on molecular scale organization. Scientists around @RGolestanian now proposed a mechanism to escape these traps and to overcome the energy barrier. ↗️🚧 @LivMatPhys

Happy 99th birthday to @mpids. Next year, on 16th July 2025, we will celebrate its 100th anniversary and a long legacy in dynamics and self-organization that started with fluid dynamics and turbulence and branched out to other fields encompassing physics, chemistry, and biology.
🥳Happy Birthday! 🎉
Today our institute turns 99 years old. We can look back on a long history at the institute. Likewise, we are looking forward to the year 2025 and our upcoming 100th anniversary with great anticipation. @maxplanckpress #MPIDS #Göttingen #99years
