This Labor Day, I remember my father was in Memphis, standing with striking sanitation workers when he was assassinated. The fight for civil rights has always been a fight for economic justice, for dignity, fair wages, and the right to organize. It's why they called it the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. #LaborDay

This simply isn't true. UBI advocates don't push UBI as a cure-all. It's just that unconditional cash provided as a stable regular income has a lot of observed positive impacts. And you can cherry-pick trials with small impacts on work when provision isn't community wide, but the overall impact across all trials is positive. Proponents push Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a cure-all, but the data tells a different story. Recent trials show unconditional cash reduces labor force participation and earnings. Americans deserve better and that’s what states can offer with the RISE pilots. americanideafoundation.com/2…

"Contrary to popular belief, people rarely panic in disasters. ...biggest challenge is often lethargy and denial — people tend to freeze or remain passive rather than exhibit chaotic behavior. [this] can be deadly; as it delays taking necessary action." jordanharbinger.com/amanda-r…

We all know universality trumps means-tested. No them vs us. Better still, nationalise. PR + UBI + #UBS + GND.

"The most important word is: No. To say no to dependency, to poor working conditions, to abusive behavior." The freedom to say no is the foundation of every fair deal. That's what basic income makes possible.

Every so often, the idea of Guaranteed Basic Income comes up as a political topic in Canada. To test the effects of the idea, Manitoba conducted the Manitoba Basic Annual Income Experiment in the 1970s. This is the story of Mincome. 📸 Winnipeg Sun 🧵 1/8

Dauphin was selected because it was large enough with 10,000 people to generate sufficient results, but not so large it would cost too much. Typically, an average family in Dauphin was guaranteed $16,000 a year under the program. 📸 KMR Photography 🧵4/8

The program ended in 1979 under the provincial and federal Progressive Conservative governments of Sterling Lyon and Joe Clark. No Mincome report was issued, but the results of the experiment have been analyzed by academic institutions since the 1980s. 📸 Lyon Family 🧵5/8

Working hours dropped for men and women, just slightly, to provide more family time. Domestic violence rates fell by 30%. Hospital visits declined by 8.5%. The period of Mincome also saw a reduction in rates of psychiatric hospitalization. 📸 Dauphin Eco. Devel. 🧵6/8
