(Belatedly), this finally marks the end of the @LivingLibs project. Public libraries & their workers pick up so many of the pieces of our persistently underfunded services while facing continuing cuts, restructuring, closures. They’re extraordinary, underestimated AND STATUTORY.

Anyway, a @gdnlongread is good and everything but FUND PUBLIC LIBRARIES! THEY ARE STATUTORY UNDER THE PUBLIC LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS ACT 1964! IT'S THE LAW! and also no library hand-wringing without joining your public library, please

And if you want to know more about libraries and mental health, cuts to services, digital inclusion, etc, there's an oral history archive at the British Library (possibly, erm, not available just now...) blogs.bl.uk/sound-and-vision…

Yesterday marked 3yrs of working in Libraries (specifically public libraries). And I've posted before about how much I love it, how deciding to take the step into the profession literally changed my life, for the better.... But I want to share a longish story about yesterday 1/9

Hello, little flurry of new followers! We won't be posting much on this account any more, aside from the odd public libraries-related RT, but you can reach us on @pykelets and/or @ShelleyTrower2 if you have questions about the project, livinglibraries.uk or our future plans

In a tough week for higher education in the UK, it is good to be reminded just why we believe in this research and how much we loved collaborating with excellent colleagues like @LauraBombora. Thank you @a_bit_lit and @andykesson!

"People take problems of all shapes and sizes to the library – personal, practical, environmental, epistemological – searching for answers, advice or support that they are often unable to access anywhere else." Me, for @BL_OralHistory, on public libraries, cuts, crises + Covid.

There is a collection of interviews/statements on libraries at the @soundarchive of the British Library, gathered by the @livinglibs project which just finished.

Borough libraries began lending books to shelters during the Blitz. In Feb 1940, St Pancras introduced the first Travelling Library Van (‘A Library to your Door’). And after Bethnal Green library was bombed, they created a new version, underground. (Photos from @LBTHArchives).
