On #InternationalWomensDay, we would like to talk about how the criminal justice system is failing vulnerable women in the UK and why #SafeHomes for those leaving prison is essential for successful rehabilitation. (1/10)

Thank you London Assembly members for unanimously passing this motion from me and @semakaleng for more coordinated housing support for women leaving prison. As one woman told us, with safe accommodation, everything else to start afresh can fall into place. london.gov.uk/press-releases…

NEW: On #InternationalWomensDay I wanted to share a speech I gave last week supporting much improved support for women leaving prison. This is an issue I am hugely passionate about and I thank both @sianberry and @Semakaleng for raising this in the @LondonAssembly #IWD2022

Fantastic to see @libdemdaisy present the Women Leaving Prison (Accommodation) Bill to the @HouseofCommons. Many vulnerable women face homelessness on release from prison each year in the UK, putting them at risk of abuse, exploitation and increasing their chances of reoffending
Too many women prisoners are currently left homeless on release. So this #IWD2022, I presented a Bill to create a duty on the Govt to provide safe and secure accommodation for all women leaving prison @LondonPrisons

Good to see @LondonAssembly have passed a plenary motion calling for #SafeHomes for women leaving prison. Far too many leave prison to homelessness, which sets them up to fail, leaves them vulnerable and desperate and increases likelihood of reoffending.

Women who are #homeless are often hiding from harm, spending time #hiddenhomeless on friend’s sofas, trapped in abusive relationship or seeking safe places to sleep on the street. This means they are often missing from official statistics and harder to reach #IWD22 #IWD2022 #IWD

Thousands of vulnerable women face homelessness on release from prison each year in the UK. This impacts their lives, their families lives, and makes it impossible to rehabilitate. On #InternationalWomensDay, we are calling for @MOJgovuk to provide #SafeHomes to end this crisis.

Absolutely shocking that @MoJGovUK drafted guidance for prison leavers to survive homelessness. No prisoner should be released without safe and secure housing. Wet wipes and baking soda are a far cry from the solution. How can anyone in this situation rebuild their lives?
This is completely unacceptable. Guidance on how to survive on the streets is simply offensive and not what people need. We urge the Government not to issue this and instead help prison-leavers to access housing and the right support. telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/03…
Really looking forward to working with you on the important issue of support for women leaving prison. Everyone, do take the time to learn more about @LondonPrisons at londonprisonsmission.org
Thank you to @Semakaleng for seconding the Plenary Motion yesterday on support for women leaving prison. Access to safe accommodation on release from prison plays an important role in helping women rebuild their lives. #SafeHomesforWomenLeavingPrison

Shocking report released today by @Agenda_alliance and @the_AYJ showing the crucial need for the UK criminal justice system to address the specific needs and risks of young women in the system.
Today we launch new research with @the_AYJ, on young women’s pathways into the justice system. Without immediate attention, girls & young women will remain marginalised and locked in a cycle of harm, inequality, & re-offending. Thanks to @LBFEW for funding weareagenda.org/young-women-…

Thank you @ShaunBaileyUK for your support of the Plenary Motion calling on the Mayor to provide better support to women leaving prison. 77% of women leaving prison were released into homelessness putting them at risk of abuse, addiction and increases their chance of reoffending.
