We often talk about the role of positive selection in #speciation. But what about balancing selection? I'm SO proud to share our new paper "Allorecognition genes drive reproductive isolation in #Podospora anserina" now in @NatureEcoEvo! 1/n

🚨 Ancient DNA Alert 🚨
Do you depend on BWA aln, and worry that the world’s HPC clusters are pivoting towards GPUs?
Fear no more!
We here present G-ALN, a GPU implementation that is >6 times faster and produces byte-identical outputs to BWA aln!

1/ There are a ton of cool papers coming out on evolutionary transitions in individuality right now! Here are five recent ones I've really enjoyed, spanning Snowball Earth, volvocine algae, plasmids that fuse into a new individual, the relatives of animals, and... water kefir

Big news for fungal biodiversity!🍄🌿See FunEndo–a global repository bringing together 105,000 fungal endophyte records from 4,500+ studies. It reveals how different plant organs host their own unique fungal communities. doi.org/10.65390/fdiv.2026.1…

It's out!! Using population and comparative genomics of Podospora fungi, we show that a class of genes called #NLRs display evolutionary signatures that are consistent with an immune function, much like in plants and animals! 1/n 🍄 #popgen #fungi

So in conclusion, NLR genes might play underappreciated roles in fungal immunity, like pathogen defense or even symbiont recognition. Now it's time for molecular biologists to prove it! #immunity
This work is the culmination of my postdoc grant and work with Sven Saupe from the University of Bordeaux, France. It's a very long and comprehensive paper 😅, very much in my style. I know it's a lot but I hope you give it a chance! /fin #postdoclife #fungi #immunity
