I am happy to introduce Longevity Brief, a new monthly editorial project built around a simple idea: science should help people live not only longer, but healthier lives. Each issue will offer a concise and carefully curated selection of recent research on healthy aging and longevity. The aim is to highlight a small number of studies that help us understand how people can maintain health, resilience, participation, and independence across the life course. The first issue, From Biological Aging to Everyday Independence, is now available on LinkedIn. It moves across several levels of aging, from molecular changes in skeletal muscle and blood to frailty, disability, mobility, and participation in daily life. I hope Longevity Brief can become a useful space for clear, evidence-based discussion about the science of longer, healthier lives. linkedin.com/pulse/from-biol…

Can structured exercise be as important as medication in protecting the diabetic heart—and even enhance the benefits of newer antidiabetic therapies? Diabetic cardiomyopathy remains a major challenge despite advances in pharmacotherapy. This review highlights how regular exercise can reduce inflammation, cellular stress, fibrosis, and cardiomyocyte loss while improving endothelial and mitochondrial function. Emerging evidence also suggests exercise may work synergistically with antidiabetic medications to improve cardiovascular outcomes. How should exercise be integrated into future diabetes and heart failure management strategies? pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4235… @YoshiokaLab @CUNYMed @AmyThomas #Cardiology #Physical training #Insulin sensitivity #Cardiac metabolism #Oxidative stress #Pharmacological mechanism

I had the luck to meet and befriend Antonio Abbate 25 years ago while working with the late Attilio Maseri. The best definition Antonio gave of me? 'I worry whenever I agree with Giuseppe!'" @AbbateAntonio

Dybala has left generational money on the table to stay with Roma. He turned down a €75M offer from Saudi last summer, to stay on a team playing Europa League football. Now, he has taken a 60% pay cut to stay for another season after being one of the main contributors at the end of last season, helping push Roma into a Champions League spot. Since arriving in the Italian capital in the summer of 2022, no player has scored more goals for Roma than Paulo Dybala. Forever grateful. 💎💛❤️

(part 3) In summary, cardiorespiratory fitness remains impaired after successfully reperfused recent STEMI, despite rather preserved resting cardiac function. Cardiac and peripheral reserve partially explain the impairments, and preserving these may improve fitness after STEMI. We should be doing better at preserving and/or restoring cardiorespiratory fitness after successfully reperfused STEMI.

📊 This figure summarizes one of the key messages of our recent Perspective in Discover Public Health. Most cardiovascular prevention strategies are built around the identification of individuals at high short-term predicted risk. But population risk does not work only through the highest-risk tail. 🌍 In the PURE study, a substantial proportion of cardiovascular events occurred among individuals not classified as high risk, with this pattern being particularly evident in low- and middle-income countries. This is the prevention paradox in cardiovascular disease: many events arise from people at low or intermediate predicted risk because they represent the largest part of the population. 🫀 The implication is not that risk scores should be abandoned. Rather, they should be complemented by approaches that consider life-course risk trajectories, cumulative exposure, social determinants of health, environmental risk, and scalable population-level prevention. Prevention should not start only when a threshold is crossed. 🔗 Full article available here: rdcu.be/fo7vL #Cardiology #PublicHealth #CardiovascularPrevention #GlobalHealth #LMICs #HealthEquity #Prevention @jamundus20, @LuigiSpadafora, @MarcoBernardiMD, @micheleg1390, @Figliozzis, @PeroneFrancesco, @gbiondizoccai, @DrMichaelShapir, @SABOURETCardio, @e_marzetti

Could platelet size differences between mitral and aortic valve replacement patients reveal more about anticoagulation biology than anticoagulation quality itself? A new study in mechanical heart valve recipients found that mean platelet volume (MPV) showed distinct relationships with INR depending on valve type—but did not reliably predict anticoagulation quality (TTR). Despite long-term warfarin therapy, only 34.1% of patients achieved effective anticoagulation control, highlighting the persistent challenge of optimizing management in this high-risk population. Interestingly, MPV inversely correlated with INR in mitral valve replacement patients, but not in aortic valve replacement patients, suggesting potential valve-specific platelet dynamics. What mechanisms could explain these differences, and what biomarkers should future studies explore to improve anticoagulation monitoring? #CardioTwitter #Cardiology #HeartValves #Anticoagulation #Thrombosis pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4201…
