I'm really going to miss Opus 5. Every model has had its quirks ("You're absolutely right!"), but Opus 5 was serving up chicken fried tokens like none other. I did my best impression of the Opus 5 dialect of Claudish in the Opus 5.5 announcement thread on HN. Ubi sunt!

corollary: this gives you a loose indication of how long they think it will take to get to the next "major version" (whole number)

if you're talking about why it's 5.5 and not 5.1: that's because ai companies have accepted that the public processes this as "halfway to 6" rather than "minor version 5 of opus 5" and have stopped trying to do version numbers with them

before AI my philosophy was that if i leave a bad review then i need to be very careful to explain why, but when i review slop now idk what to do. Do you just outright say "this is clearly slop" or what?

made the mistake of asking claude to proofread an email in which i described claude output that i had not reviewed as potential "slop" and claude got really really mad at me

FWIW when I'm AC on a paper where this happens I do do my best to take the authors' work into account

2. a wordle-esque daily challenge where everyone sees the same questions and the results are somehow shareable would be fun so you can tell your friends how dumb they are for missing #7 etc.

come on, the charitable read is that the "why" means "how it arises" there

this is about review articles (surveys of specific topics/subfields), not peer reviews (evaluations of submitted works)

could it not be that the "There are pants all over the road." case is just ambiguous in a way that that either one in that squirrel pair is not?
