The Charioteer of Motya is a truly extraordinary work of ancient art, considered one of the most important surviving examples of classical sculpture from the ancient world... The statue was discovered in 1979 by a team of archaeologists from the University of Palermo. It was found buried in the ancient city of Motya, near the north gate, where it had been intentionally hidden and covered with rubble. The fact that it was buried, rather than simply left to decay, is likely why it is preserved in such excellent condition, missing only its arms and lower legs. Its survival testifies to the fact that it was considered a precious artifact even in ancient times. The Charioteer of Motya is believed to have been sculpted around 450 BC, a period known as the Classical Period in Greek art. The sculpture is a perfect example of the "wet drapery" style, in which the folds of the garment cling to the body, revealing the form beneath. The charioteer's body is depicted with a sense of fluid, counter-contrast movement, a pose in which the weight is shifted onto one leg, lending the figure a natural, lifelike posture. Although the sculpture is highly regarded for its masterful execution, its identity is a matter of debate. Scholars have speculated that it could represent a charioteer, a warrior, or even a victorious athlete. The sculpture is the centerpiece of the Giuseppe Whitaker Museum on the island of San Pantaleo. The museum stands on the site of the ancient Phoenician city of Motya, which was an important trading hub. The island was purchased by the English archaeologist and amateur ornithologist Joseph Whitaker in the late 19th century. His foundation continues to preserve the island's historical significance and houses the charioteer in the museum, ensuring its permanence in the place where it was found. #archaeohistories

The Emperor’s Hall, located in the Munich Residence, is one of the most important ceremonial rooms in the palace. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, it stands out for its exquisite iconographic program, which includes historical tapestries and friezes that represent virtues of antiquity to exalt good governance. It is located in the largest urban palace in Germany, located in the heart of the city.
