The Blair Witch Project” was a groundbreaking found-footage horror movie about three documentary filmmakers who got lost in the woods while making a movie about an ominous local legend. The film is set in Burkittsville, Maryland, and some scenes were recorded in Seneca Creek State Park.
Called “Black Hills Forest” in the movie, Seneca Creek became the eerie woods that the movie’s cast wandered through and camped in, as more and more strange events occurred and eerie noises from the forest surrounded their tents. You can visit some of the iconic scenes from the movie, such as the creek where they speak to fishermen about the legend of the Blair Witch and “Coffin Rock,” a small cave and rock outcropping where the movie’s characters share a story connected to the Blair Witch legend: after a Maryland girl disappeared in the late 1800s, people went out to look for her, and the bodies of all the members of the search party were found tied up at this spot.
Come to Seneca Creek this Halloween season to visit these sites yourself and experience the legend of the Blair Witch. Beware—there’s very limited parking at Black Rock Mill, where these sites are accessible from, and don't park on the shoulder of Black Rock Road. Visitors should also be cautioned not to pick up any unusual figures made out of sticks, or follow unexpected sounds that lead them off the trail…
