You have to feel for Cyril Mirfin of Bramley, Leeds. In 1947, a tall figure in brown haunted his 9-year-old home, standing over him while he slept. He called in the Leeds Psychical Research Society (@SPR1882 relation?) to 'lay the ghost'. #leedsghost

mapped 106 alleged big cat sightings across Northamptonshire and its borders to forecast where the next report will come from, then tested it, and a list of large towns did better than the sightings. Where will the Rutland panther appear next?

Typical MJ rabbit hole, looking at panther sightings in Northants and then looking for statistical patterns. I've then created a predictor of where the next sighting will be. Will be interesting to see if it works.

Today I'm mainly researching the Binham Priory monk sightings of 1935 and the Stiffkey Fiddler. As you do.. #ghostresearcher #ghosthistorian

In the 1880s, one family's ghost appeared to the mother as an apron-wearing old nurse and to a visitor as a slender lady dissolving into a cloud, yet everyone called her Dorothy. My new piece asks why witnesses to the same haunting see different things. mjwayland.com/haunt-field/th…

Woodchester Mansion is historically complex, genuine reported hauntings and ghost lore for well over 100 years. It’s my favourite haunted mansion, and it’s time to review my files with fresh eyes.. #woodchestermansion

The Blagdon Inn, Paignton - 4 January 1978 - The ghost burns down the pub. It was rebuilt, but sadly closed in 2022 and is being converted into private apartments. Would you buy one? #devonghosts

1/ William Batt died in London on 9 Dec 1684. That same evening, he is said to have walked into Oakwell Hall near Birtstall and up to his own room, leaving a bloody footprint on the boards. #heritageopendays #hauntedheritage

2/ A surviving bond puts him at the Black Swan in Holborn that day. Heywood recorded he was "slain by Mr Gream". Buried at Birstall, 30 Dec. The ghost may be folklore, but the man is a matter of record. Oakwell opens on Sunday 13 September for @heritageopenday

1/ On the evening of Sunday 23 September 1979, six children in Wollaton Park reported thirty small cars coming out of the bushes at them. Two bearded gnomes in each, no engine noise, a bell where the horn should have been, and they could jump logs.

4/ Probably the best-documented fairy encounter in modern England, which is not remotely the same thing as saying it happened. Read the transcript and you find the children already had a private folklore about that park. Make of it what you will.

3/ That transcript survives, along with drawings by two of the children. Aldridge later sent the cassettes to Marjorie Johnson, who wrote Seeing Fairies. A documented chain of custody, which is rarer in this material than you would think.

2/ The children ran into the surrounding streets, but the gnomes would not follow them out of the park. Back at Southwold Primary in Radford, their headmaster, Robin Aldridge, tape-recorded separate interviews with three of them within forty-eight hours.

For the last 30+ years, I've been developing my Haunt Field theory. While researching I've discovered some great work in Japan by Kazuhiko Komatsu about the 'movement' of Yokai and how they have drifted as urbanisation expanded. #hauntfield

There is a mortsafe in Borley churchyard. An iron cage bolted over a grave against the body-snatchers, 1820s and 30s, and overwhelmingly a Scottish and northern thing. Borley is a forty-nine-house village on the Suffolk border, and I have no idea why it is there.
