24-year-old Rachel Apa dies after collapsing in Central Park just two miles from completing the New York City Marathon.
Her parents say they were tracking her on the marathon tracking app when she stopped moving at Mile 24.
"Final stretch," her father texted her at Mile 23, but she never replied.
Her parents say they were waiting at Mile 25 and tracking her on the app, but noticed she stopped moving at Mile 24.
After a few minutes, they headed to Mile 24, where they found an ambulance pulling out.
According to The New York Times, Apa collapsed before a social worker ran over and tried to find a pulse. Three people took turns trying to resuscitate her.
She was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where doctors spent six hours trying to save her life.
Apa's father says she died from rhabdomyolysis, a condition that can be caused by exertion, in which skeletal muscle rapidly disintegrates and poisons the blood.
"It’s unfathomable. Perfect health, perfect shape, 24 years old," her father said.
Apa played field hockey at Bucknell University and ran the race for her grandfather, who died from Parkinson’s disease.

I’m in agreement with much of Matt’s statement and I don’t think it’s the girls fault the plane crashed.
But since part of my job is to observe male/female dynamics to help people with dating and relationships, here is a question and an observation:
Why was an inexperienced 20 year old in a co-pilot seat for Lear?
How many men under 21 with similar experience have been hired in the past year or two by Lear? How many have you even heard of?
When you realize that there are plenty of young male pilots but you aren’t find them flying these jets, it points to the common problem we have in 2026; men with mind viruses who simp for pretty young girls and hiring them for things they aren’t experienced to do. With a patronizing frame of “you’ll do great” and some experienced 55 yr old pilot thinking he can take her in.
There were a series of arrogant mistakes made that led to a catastrophic crash according to people who are pilots and know more than I do. Hiring a cute gal with not much experience but a lot of spunk and potential (or whatever their boomer rationalization was) is just one of those mistakes.
It’s not DEI per se and it’s not the girls fault. But that doesn’t mean modern simping from dumb guys who don’t even realize they are doing it didn’t play a role.
I’m not at all shy about blaming DEI where appropriate, and it often is appropriate. But I see no DEI angle on this jet crash. The female pilot was not flying the plane. The captain was a 55 year old man. Trying to blame the girl for the crash is absurd and baseless. Yes she seemed frantic and terrified in the radio call but I would be to, and so would you. And even if she’d been cool as a cucumber, there isn’t the slightest reason to think it would have made any difference at all.
I’ll fully admit that I wouldn’t get in a plane if the copilot was a 20 year old girl. But that doesn’t change the fact that there is no evidence that she was personally at fault. And for the record, becoming a pilot at 20 is pretty impressive. She had her shit together a lot more than I did at that age. I’ll say that at least. I don’t think airlines or private charter companies should be making any specific effort at all to be “inclusive” of women or whatever, but it’s still admirable for a kid to have a goal like that and pursue it. I don’t see any reason to mock her, as some have done.
Some of the comments about that audio recording have been callous to an unhuman degree. None of you would have the stoicism in that situation that you demand from this girl. And again, there’s no reason to think stoicism would have magically kept the plane from falling out of the sky. Besides, she actually did seem pretty calm in that recording until the last few seconds, relative to the circumstance she was in. I don’t want my pilot to panic but I also don’t want them to be completely indifferent to the prospect of a fatal crash, as some commenters here apparently expect.
