Ben Affleck reveals he writes Python, understands convolutional neural networks, worked extensively with GPUs, and used his celebrity status to get private looks at Google and OpenAI’s video models
“I’ve always been kind of into computers since I was young. Then, when film started to move from analog film to digital, I became more interested in that aspect of it. The visual-effects workflow for many years has included machine learning, so I can write pretty shitty Python scripts and stuff like that.
“With convolutional neural networks, which were the precursors to what the transformer can do, which is much more computation simultaneously, you would do things like look at what’s called a tensor. That’s the numerical translation of a visual image in numbers, like the batch number, the frame number and the red, green and blue values of each pixel in each frame. It’s just that simple. That numeric is called a tensor.
“You’d use a convolutional neural network to identify patterns that reveal what’s called edge detection or feature extraction, which is identifying patterns well enough to know, this is where the window ledge is, so we can more easily take the green-screen image out and replace it with something.
“That was familiar to me early on because, prior to Artists Equity, I had a small visual-effects company. I’ve worked with GPUs a lot too. The visual-effects guys said, ‘Hey, you should see. There are a couple: Google and this other company, OpenAI, are doing really interesting stuff with transformers in video.’
“I’ve learned that I can actually just call up and go, ‘Hey, it’s Ben Affleck. Can I come see what you’re doing?’ Sometimes people say yes, to my astonishment.”

Ο Αρειος Πάγος (Α.Π.) αναγνώρισε με την απόφασή του 922/2026 ότι η καταδίκη του κ. Γεωργίου για παράβαση καθήκοντος ήταν εσφαλμένη.
Οταν ξέσπασε η κρίση, οι δανειστές απαίτησαν ακριβή στατιστικά στοιχεία ως προϋπόθεση για την παροχή οικονομικής βοήθειας. Ο κ. Γεωργίου, πρώην στέλεχος ΔΝΤ, τοποθετήθηκε επικεφαλής της νεοσύστατης ΕΛΣΤΑΤ τον Αύγουστο του 2010, δηλαδή τρεις μήνες μετά την υπογραφή του πρώτου μνημονίου. Είχε προηγηθεί η έκθεση-καταπέλτης της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής τον Ιανουάριο του 2010, που τεκμηρίωνε την υποβολή αναξιόπιστων στοιχείων μέχρι τότε. Η μεθοδολογία και τα στοιχεία που κατήρτισε ο κ. Γεωργίου δημοσιοποιήθηκαν τον Νοέμβριο του 2010 και χρησιμοποιήθηκαν ως βάση για τον σχεδιασμό των προγραμμάτων προσαρμογής. Είναι πλήρως αποδεκτά από τη Eurostat και συνεχίζουν να χρησιμοποιούνται σήμερα από τις ελληνικές κυβερνήσεις. Παρότι ευθυγράμμισε πλήρως τα ελληνικά στατιστικά στοιχεία με τους ευρωπαϊκούς κανόνες, το δικαστικό σύστημα άσκησε πολλαπλές διώξεις εναντίον του αντί να ασχοληθεί με όσους είχαν καταρτίσει τα «Greek statistics» προηγουμένως.
Απώτερος στόχος των μεθοδεύσεων ήταν η μετάθεση των πολιτικών ευθυνών για την οικονομική καταστροφή που προκάλεσε η πελατειακή διαχείριση της εξουσίας σε μη πολιτικά πρόσωπα. Οπως έγραψε ο Μάρκους Γουόκερ, επικεφαλής του γραφείου της Wall Street Journal στην Αθήνα, «η υπόθεση Γεωργίου δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο από μια προσπάθεια να ξεπλύνουν τις κυβερνήσεις προ μνημονίου και να επιστρέψουν με την πρώτη ευκαιρία στις παλιές καλές συνήθειες. Δεν νομίζω ότι έχετε καταλάβει πόσο κακό έχει κάνει στην αξιοπιστία της Ελλάδος αυτή η ιστορία».
Η καφκική περιπέτεια του κ. Γεωργίου είναι κλασικό παράδειγμα της άρνησης της πραγματικότητας και της προσπάθειας μετάθεσης των ευθυνών που χαρακτηρίζει τη σύγχρονη ελληνική ιστορία.
Η καθυστερημένη διόρθωση μιας μεγάλης αδικίας εις βάρος του κ. Γεωργίου υπογραμμίζει την ανάγκη να κοιτάζουμε κατάματα την πραγματικότητα και να αναλαμβάνουμε την ευθύνη για τις πράξεις και τις παραλείψεις μας. Είναι ώρα η σημερινή μεταρρυθμιστική κυβέρνηση να δηλώσει δημόσια ότι ευχαριστεί τον κ. Γεωργίου για την αποκατάσταση της αξιοπιστίας των ελληνικών στατιστικών στοιχείων και να ζητήσει συγγνώμη για τις διώξεις που υπέστη.
