Watch the latest #GUTVideo on the paper by Prasad et al. “Indole-3-propionic acid links gut dysfunction to diabetic retinopathy: a biomarker and novel therapeutic approach” which investigates how disruptions in gut health contribute to diabetic retinopathy (DR), a major complication of type 2 diabetes. Watch the #GUTVideo here: bit.ly/3RMXCQA Read the paper here: bit.ly/4nyhRO5 Researchers focused on tryptophan metabolism and the microbial metabolite indole-3-propionic acid (IPA), which has anti-inflammatory and barrier-protective effects. Using diabetic mouse models, they showed that restoring tryptophan absorption through engineered probiotics, tryptophan-containing dipeptides, or direct IPA supplementation improved gut barrier integrity, reduced inflammation, enhanced glucose regulation, and prevented retinal damage. Human participants with DR had significantly lower IPA levels and higher markers of gut permeability and toxic metabolites compared with diabetics without DR and healthy controls. The study suggests that impaired gut–retina communication plays a key role in DR progression. Overall, IPA emerged as both a potential biomarker for detecting diabetic retinopathy and a promising therapeutic target for preventing or slowing retinal damage in diabetes. #DiabeticRetinopathy

Obesity doesn't just affect the waistline—it reshapes the brain. Emerging evidence suggests chronic metabolic overload disrupts neurovascular coupling, blood–brain barrier integrity, cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, and myelination, creating conditions that may accelerate neurodegeneration. As obesity and neurological disorders rise in parallel, understanding these interconnected pathways could reveal new strategies to protect brain health across the lifespan. #Neuroscience #Obesity #BrainHealth nature.com/articles/s42255-0…
