This morning Israeli forces expanded their incursion in western Khan Younis, southern Gaza. Tanks advanced, and airstrikes and drones fired into an area full of displaced civilians with no prior warning. As they advanced further west, people who have already been displaced multiple times were squeezed into a smaller space closer to the sea. This latest offensive has seriously impacted operations at two facilities MSF operates in. MSF teams had to suspend activities and evacuate Al Attar clinic today as Israeli tanks and gunfire approached as close as 100 metres away. The military incursion also meant that ambulance movements to Nasser hospital were stopped. "The quadcopter and the military vehicles stationed near the clinic were firing. Several bullets penetrated the facility. Then, we heard multiple explosions around the clinic, and shrapnel hit the building. We were stuck for over 30 hours, we continued working after a 24-hour shift,” said Rami Abu Anza, MSF Nursing Team Supervisor in Al Attar clinic. These latest developments are yet another obstacle to an already overwhelmed and only partially functional health system. Today, teams at MSF’s Al Mawasi clinic received two boys who were shot at the Israeli-US militarised distribution site in Rafah. While they were in critical condition, medical teams couldn’t refer them to any nearby hospitals. The ones in the area are either too dangerous to reach or already full. “The health system here has collapsed; there's no hospital to go to," said MSF’s Dr. Iman Abo Shawish, Senior Medical Doctor in AlMawasi clinic

🔴 Today, MSF’s hospital in Old Fangak, South Sudan, was bombed. The pharmacy was destroyed. All medical supplies lost. There are reports of people killed and injured. This is the only functional hospital in the area. Stop the bombing. Protect civilians. Protect healthcare.

🚨 #MSF condemns a despicable attack on its ambulance in El Fasher, killing one passenger On January 10, an MSF ambulance was shot at in El Fasher, #North_Darfur, by an unknown gunman while referring a female patient in labor requiring emergency surgical procedure from MSF field hospital in Zamzam camp to Saudi Hospital in #El_Fasher, the only public hospital with surgical capacity still standing in the area despite relentless attacks. In the clearly marked ambulance with the MSF logo and flag, were the patient, her two caretakers, MSF drivers and medical staff. One of the caretakers was fatally injured by the gunfire. She passed away after the crew eventually reached Saudi Hospital. This is the second shooting against an MSF ambulance in less than a month in El Fasher. “We are horrified by this deadly attack on a humanitarian crew carrying out lifesaving medical work where it’s desperately needed. Our priority is to support the people who have been attacked and are obviously shocked. We also need to engage with all armed actors active in the area to understand what happened and obtain guarantees that patients, medical staff, ambulances and health facilities are respected to continue working”, says Michel Olivier Lacharité, MSF's head of emergency operations. An MSF ambulance was hit by bullets in El Fasher on 27 December during a similar referral of patients from Zamzam to Saudi Hospital, but no one was injured. Fighting between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces allied with a coalition of armed groups have significantly escalated in the area since May 2024. MSF currently runs a field hospital in #Zamzam_camp, where people face repeated shelling from the RSF after months of siege and starvation. Because of the worsening security conditions, we had to suspend part of our medical services, like the outpatient program for malnourished children, to focus on the most critical cases requiring hospital care. Since December, we have treated 51 people injured by the shelling in #Zamzam.

🛑 ALERT from @MSF in #Zamzam Camp, North #Darfur 🛑 Sudan’s largest displacement site is under attack with intense shelling by RSF since yesterday evening. The attack has created a living nightmare for the displaced people in Zamzam camp, with casualties, panic and mass displacement. On December 1st, MSF teams received 8 injured people, including women and children as young as 4 years old with severe injuries such as chest trauma and fractures. Four critically injured patients were referred to another facility this morning, just before shelling resumed to hit near the market and MSF field Hospital. The situation is beyond chaotic: patients and medical staff are leaving the camp and trying to run for their lives. MSF’s hospital is now empty, with the last three ICU patients—still dependent on oxygen—evacuated under dangerous conditions. “Not only have people been starving, but they are also now being bombarded and forced to flee again. We're concerned about their safety, including our staff, and we urgently call for the protection of patients, civilians, medical teams and health facilities, in Zamzam Camp. Safe passage must also be guaranteed for those escaping this violence.” said Michel-Olivier Lacharité MSF’s Head of Emergency Operations #TalkAboutSudan

⚫️ We denounce in the strongest possible terms the killing of our colleague, Hasan Suboh, on the night of 24 October during Israeli military operations in Khan Younis, South Gaza. According to the Ministry of Health, this attack killed at least 33 people, including 14 children. Aged 41, Hasan had been working with MSF since 2019. He was married and had 7 children. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, and with our colleagues in Gaza. This is our eighth colleague killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023, and the second in two weeks. Through its war on Gaza, Israel continues to show a fundamental disregard for civilian lives. This must stop now.

We are devastated after the loss of Nasser Hamdi Abdelatif Al Shalfouh on 10 October, our colleague, who was killed by shrapnel injuries to his legs and chest he suffered on 8 October in Jabalia, north Gaza. Jabalia has been under attacks by Israeli forces since 7 October. Nasser joined MSF as a driver in March 2023, but has not been working since the war started as MSF activities in north Gaza were severely affected. After being injured, he received care at Al Awda Hospital for his injuries before being moved to Kamal Adwan Hospital, where he could not get adequate care. For over a year, Israeli forces have dismantled the health system in Gaza, impeding access to life-saving care for people. Medical evacuations within Gaza are also extremely difficult, as the north is largely cut off from the rest of Gaza, further making it difficult for people to access care. We are horrified by the killing of our colleague which we strongly condemn, and call yet again for the respect and protection of civilians. In this tragic moment, our thoughts are with Nasser’s wife and two children and rest of his family, and all colleagues mourning his death.

Thousands of people are trapped in Jabalia camp, north Gaza, as Israeli forces attack the area. “Nobody is allowed to get in or out, anyone who tries is getting shot,” says Sarah Vuylsteke, MSF project coordinator. Five of our staff are trapped in the camp, fearing for their lives. “We were staying at the Al-Yemen Al-Saeed Hospital, but they bombed it. About 20 people were killed. I don’t know what to do, at any moment we could die. People are starving. I am afraid to stay, and I am also afraid to leave,” says Haydar, MSF driver trapped in Jabalia camp. Israeli forces issued evacuation orders on 7 October in Jabalia camp while carrying out attacks at the same time, preventing people from leaving the area safely. Forced evacuations of homes and bombing of neighbourhoods by the Israeli forces is turning north Gaza into uninhabitable ruins. We call on the Israeli forces to halt forced displacements and to stop the all-out war on people in Gaza. Israeli forces must also ensure the protection of civilians and hospitals and allow desperately needed humanitarian supplies to enter the north as a matter of extreme urgency.
