Our study on ancient Anatolian sheep 🐑 genomes 🧬 is finally out!!! Tons of insights into the early domestication processes in Anatolia and some interesting bits to look into with further research across Eurasia. Check the paper by Damla Kaptan et al: doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msae1…

Check out our review on the Evolution of Sensory Receptors, the incredible molecular machines that decode the outside sensory world! 🪲🐭🦎🐙🐓🦠🦗🐌💃
How do organisms evolve new traits and behaviors? In @AnnualReviews, @wendyssae surveys major sensory receptor families to uncover evolutionary patterns of sensation driving diversification and speciation. annualreviews.org/content/jo…

I have a new story in the Washington Post on how Burning Man die-hards hope this year's lackluster ticket sales will mean a throwback to the old days, before "sparkleponies" and Silicon Valley ruined it washingtonpost.com/travel/20…

What I don't get about academia is the chronic lack of celebration. It is hard to get & maintain grant funding, hard to get papers accepted without Faustian bargains, hard to be a great mentor, & hard to maximize trainee success. All of it is hard. We should celebrate everything.

One of the best things about attending conferences is that you get a chance to see what your former students are up to. It's great to see what @masterolojist @MSrigyan @genesandstuff have turned into #SMBEbeyond

Here is a shameless plug for my first postdoc paper, a big collaboration with lots of cool people at UCSC, particularly co-first author Chloe Orland. Read it to learn about abalone, population bottlenecks, IBD (or lack thereof), and chrom. inversions! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

🕯️💡Our new study illuminates the mystery of why insects swarm around lights! Turns out, it's not attraction, but disorientation - insects mistake artificial lights for the sky and spiral around them. @FIU @NatGeoExplorers @dragonflyneuro @FloridaMuseum nature.com/articles/s41467-0…
NEW PAPER: Ever wondered why insects fly in all sorts of crazy patterns around lights at night? So did we! We set about recording flying insects to work out what's going on. I'll summarise what we found in this 🧵. Spoiler: We don't think they confuse lights with the moon.

Happy to share our paper on Indian wolves (Indian peninsular and Himalayan wolves). Indian wolves are unique and ancient with no gene flow between the wolves. SpringerLink link.springer.com/article/10…
