I don’t want someone to do business with me once. I want them to have such a good experience that they come back. And if they tell their friends afterward? Even better. Take care of people.

People remember whether dealing with you was easy or frustrating. They remember whether you listened. They remember whether you cared. The experience is part of what you sell.

One of the problems I see with big companies is that sometimes the customer experience gets forgotten. Processes matter. Profit matters. But at the end of all of it, you’re still dealing with a person. Don’t forget that.
67
A happy customer can become your walking advertisement. Not because you begged them to leave a review. Because they had such a good experience that they naturally started telling people.
78
Sometimes I’ll give a customer a discount even when I don’t technically have to. Someone might say I lost money. I look at it differently. Sometimes that money is an investment in the relationship.
68
Customer experience is marketing. Every interaction gives someone a story to tell about your business. Make sure it’s a story you actually want repeated.
65
If you can understand people, listen to them, and figure out what they actually need, you’ll always have an advantage in business. The product might change. People don’t.
76
Sales isn’t really about the product. Cars change. Shirts change. Food changes. Industries change. The common thread is people. Learn people.

Your child could become a doctor. They could become a teacher. They could become a janitor. The title isn’t what makes them successful. Teach them to be a good person, work hard, and treat people properly. That matters more to me.

Life can knock you down. Sometimes completely flat. But I lose when I decide not to get back up. If I can get up one more time than I fall, I’m still moving forward.
71
Whatever you focus on grows. If all you focus on is the problem, eventually the problem becomes everything you see. At some point, you have to start looking for the solution.

My dad used to say: “Every problem has a solution.” That stuck with me. Sometimes the smallest things our parents say end up becoming part of the way we live.

Every problem has a solution. That doesn’t mean the solution is easy. It means I’m going to keep looking for the next move instead of just staring at the problem.

I can tell my daughter: “You’d make a great teacher. You’re patient, creative, and good with kids.” That’s different from telling her: “You have to become a teacher.” One is encouragement. The other is control.

There’s a difference between guiding your child and choosing their life for them. You can point out their gifts. You can encourage them. But eventually they have to decide who they want to become.
76
Your kids are going to change. What they’re worried about at 10 might not be what they’re worried about at 14. That’s why you have to keep talking to them. You can’t assume you already know what’s going on.
91
You gotta date your child. Go get ice cream. Grab some food. Go for a drive. Put the phones away. Just talk. You can’t support your child properly if you don’t know what’s going on in their life.
85
Stop trying to solve your child’s problem before you know what the problem actually is. Talk to them. Ask questions. Listen. Then figure out what they actually need from you.
66
I don’t need my kids to become doctors or lawyers. I want them to become good people. Whatever career they choose, I want them to be the kind of person people can trust.

Parents should have expectations for their kids. Just make sure those expectations are about character before they’re about careers. Be honest. Be respectful. Work hard. Treat people properly. Everything else can grow from there.
