Three things that seem to be contributing to poor math achievement: 1. Multiple strategies for novice learners. Recommendation: Choose an efficient strategy that generalizes easily to (e.g.) larger numbers, teach it well, give lots of practice on it. 2. Too much focus on manipulatives & pictures. Recommendation: Fluency with abstract symbols sets kids up for later success. Move quickly to the abstract - that's where the majority of practice should be. 3. Not enough practice. Recommendation: Give lots of practice and then give more. It's how we get good at math.

A study from @durham_uni and the @UniofOxford finds major inequalities in identifying learning difficulties in England. Pupils with the same attainment are not identified equally across schools. Girls, disadvantaged pupils and those with English as an Additional Language are also less likely to be identified. This raises serious questions about fair access to support. The author of the Reading Rope, Dr. Hollis Scarborough, reminds us: oral language is foundational to reading success. If we identify language struggles earlier, we can intervene earlier. Earlier support = fewer children experiencing the devastating effects of reading failure. This is how we protect our kids. This is how we change trajectories. 📚🧠 #AIMSymposium2026 @AIMtoLearn

Our CEO @ellenbroome was honoured to speak at this week’s Education Select Committee meeting in Westminster, on the topic of reading for pleasure. “For very many dyslexic children, reading is not enjoyable. It is difficult, exhausting, and something that they avoid." Watch the full video here: loom.ly/1i6hVnA #Education #SEND #Dyslexia

To every young person being underestimated and not given the support they need: You are not the issue. You were never the problem. The problem is the lack of clear pathways to diagnosis, understanding in education, and access to the right support. When we change the system, we change outcomes. Let’s keep pushing! #CommunityQuotes #Dyslexia #PushForChange

Only 3 local authorities can say how many dyslexic children live in their area, yet around 900,000 dyslexic children are in schools. Our new British Dyslexia Association report ‘Lost in the system: Councils’ blind spot on dyslexia’, calls for dyslexia to be recorded so learners are visible and support can be planned Read more: bit.ly/49RfNeM

Every story shared strengthens the dyslexia community, raises awareness, and helps drive real change. When you make a donation, we’d love you to share why this matters to you. Try beginning with: “I want to share my story because…” “I want every dyslexic child to know…” “I hope my story will help…” Your voice could be the one that helps someone feel less alone. Dyslexia affects up to 20% of kids — the most common learning disability. And only 1/3 of students read at grade level. So why are only 28% of Colleges of Ed teaching all five components of evidence-based reading instruction (NCTQ 2023)? We can’t fix reading if we don’t fix teacher prep. @NCTQ @RoomToRead @UnderstoodOrg @DyslexiaIDA 👉🏼New NCTQ data drops 2026: teacherquality.nctq.org/revi…

It’s getting worse. While helping my mom pack, we found an old family book from 1863 talking about “phonic reading cards.” My great-great-grandparents were using phonics in 1863. Why on earth did we ever abandon it? We didn’t just lose our way, we destroyed generations!

Ontario’s Human Rights Commission concluded that its school system is systematically failing to teach children to read. Not because teachers don’t care, but because the system relies on approaches we’ve known for years don’t work. The report is clear: too many pupils are being denied their right to read due to ineffective methods, inconsistent interventions and a lack of evidence-based practice. The result? A generation of children left struggling unnecessarily, with lifelong consequences. If Scotland carried out the same kind of independent review, I fear we’d see a similar pattern. We still rely heavily on approaches that prioritise guessing strategies over decoding, that underplay phonics, and that leave struggling readers waiting far too long for help. Reading is the foundation for every other part of a child’s education. When a system gets it wrong, everything else suffers. We should be brave enough to look honestly at our own practices and make the changes needed so every child in Scotland learns to read well, early, and with confidence. If Ontario can confront this, so can we.
