One gift helped plant the seeds for 50 years of progress in eye care.
In 1961, William “Willie” Groesbeck Chapman Storm left a $500,000 gift in her will in honor of her late husband, Albert Florens Storm, to expand eye care and research for people in need.
Fifteen years later, the Storm Eye Institute opened at MUSC.
Over the decades, philanthropy from individuals and community partners has helped advance eye care, research, and specialized services, building on that early vision.
As Storm Eye celebrates 50 years, its story is a reminder of how generosity can help shape the future of healthcare for generations.

For Samantha Huge, breast cancer has always been personal.
She lost her mother to the disease when she was just 4 years old. Then, nearly 50 years later, Samantha heard the words she never expected: “You have breast cancer.”
This time, expert care was close to home at @MUSCHollings. Today, as a survivor and member of the @MUSCFoundation team, Samantha is helping shape the future of cancer care for patients and families across South Carolina.
💗 This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, join Samantha in helping make MUSC’s new comprehensive cancer hospital a reality, bringing advanced care to more South Carolinians, closer to home. buff.ly/OE3OUfA
Take a peek at the future of cancer care in South Carolina.
Opening in 2030, South Carolina’s first dedicated cancer hospital will bring comprehensive cancer care and support together in one place.
For the first time, patients in our state will have access to proton therapy, an advanced form of radiation treatment, without traveling out of state. The hospital will also bring South Carolina’s first intraoperative MRI, giving surgeons detailed images during surgery.
Explore what’s planned and the vision behind the new cancer hospital at cancercaresc.org.
Allison Hopkins Prey never expected a routine breast reduction surgery to lead to a cancer diagnosis.
Doctors discovered Stage 1 triple-negative breast cancer during her procedure, beginning a journey that included chemotherapy, radiation, and an outpouring of support.
Today, Allison is paying that love forward by helping create a future where more patients and families have access to the care and support they need.

Adam Enggasser, M.D., knew he wanted to be a doctor from the time he walked the halls of his elementary school.
Today, that dream is a reality for Adam, a 2026 College of Medicine graduate, thanks in part to generous donors who contributed to scholarships.
Scholarships are an investment in future health care professionals and the many patients who will benefit from their expert care.
