applications for slingshots more than doubled from batch 3 to batch 4. funding open science is critical to democracy. never in the past have scientists had to turn down so much money to do research they can talk about openly. top PhD students are receiving offers of millions of dollars per year from closed labs. i'm proud that at Laude we support open research. great work on slingshots batch four @bradenhancock and the @laudeinstitute team
Introducing Slingshots // FOUR: 14 projects across eight top institutions. Self-improving agent systems and harnesses, maximally-open models and training data, applications for research and decision-making โ€“ plus kernels and more. Say hello to the batch ๐Ÿงต

#AcademicX: Let me tell you about Sophia Pink ๐ŸšจMANAGEMENT JOB CANDIDATE๐Ÿšจ If you're in a b-school management department and hiring, she's a star you won't want to miss! Sophia Pink (sophiapink.com) is a PhD candidate at @Wharton. She does incredible research on decision making and goal pursuit in organizations. Sophiaโ€™s record is mind-bogglingly good (she was a productive RA before joining our program!): she has *9* publications in top journals like Organization Science, Management Science, Science, PNAS and JESP as well as an exceptional pipeline of great papers including an extraordinary, unpublished job market paper about an ambitious new field experiment on LinkedIn. I've posted the abstract from her job market paper below. Sophiaโ€™s work answers important questions about decision making, goal pursuit, and choice architecture in the age of AI. She is skilled at running both field experiments (with and without corporate partners) and lab experiments. And sheโ€™s a terrific communicator. It has been an honor and joy to advise Sophia Pink alongside an incredible group of supporting mentors including but not limited to the amazing @m_sendhil, @ME_Schweitzer, @amywrzesniewski, @angeladuckw, @edwardhchang, and @erika_kirgios. #HireThisOne | #WhartonProud

Replying to @TheEconomist
.@TheEconomist is a great publication, and Iโ€™ve learned a lot from it over the years. But I think it missed the mark with this article on @DAcemogluMIT. Daron and I publicly and privately disagree on a number of important issues, most notably on the likely magnitude of AIโ€™s productivity effects in the coming years. Weโ€™ve had many lengthy discussions about our differences, including as recently as last month. That said, Daron is not merely one of the most intelligent, interesting, and hardworking economists I know. He is also a person of great integrity. Since many people may form their impressions of him from this article or other public commentary, let me offer three anecdotes from my own experience. 1. In 2017, @tommmitchell and I co-chaired a @theNASciences committee on information technology and the workforce, bringing together a dozen leading scholars. Committee members were unpaid, and there was little extrinsic reward for doing more than the minimum. Everyone contributed, but unquestionably the person who worked hardest, and produced the most high-quality substantive material, was Daron. I came away enormously impressed by his seriousness and work ethic. 2. The article suggests that Daronโ€™s stature may discourage others from criticizing him. That has not been my experience. I remember an MIT seminar where he presented an early version of his work on robots and employment. He was subjected to exceptionally tough criticism from colleagues and graduate students, especially over his instrumental variables and other aspects of his empirical strategy. It was one of the toughest seminars I can remember. Nobody was pulling punches. If anything, the criticism was blunter because everyone knew Daron was perfectly capable of handling it. 3. Along with @professor_ajay, @akorinek, and @testingham, I helped lead the recent โ€œWe Must Act Nowโ€ statement on AI (wemustactnow.ai/). One of the first people we approached was Daron precisely because he had disagreed with me about AI capabilities and their likely economic effects. Daron and I went back and forth over the detailed wording for about a week. We ultimately found common ground. In the process, I was reminded of both his openness to new data and his attention to detail. The Economist correctly highlights some important weaknesses in the economics profession. It should certainly scrutinize the work of prominent economists, presenting arguments and counterarguments. In my view, what undermined their case was the articleโ€™s shift from criticizing his arguments to innuendo about Daron's personality. The suggestion that economists are unwilling to challenge him does not match what I have observed over 3 decades of knowing him. Criticize Daronโ€™s ideas and conclusions, as I often do. But the personal insinuations struck me as unfair.

Economics has a lamppost problem: we study what our data already measure. Unstructured data and AI will change that and that will be transformative. I'm excited to give the NBER Methods Lecture with @MelissaLDell this Thursday: "Estimation and Inference with AI-Generated Data."

AI is changing economics, and --- as we just saw in Dwarkesh's interview with Dario --- AI researchers need to start thinking about economics too! The Center for Applied AI at UChicago will be hosting an AI & Economics Summer Institute to explore exactly this. We will bring together leading researchers with advanced graduate students in economics/AI/ML/NLP for an in-person program between Aug 6 - 11.
