Very excited to be publicly launching our Visit A Heat Pump service - a chance to find out about heat pumps from people who're living with them! Congrats to all the Nesta team who've worked on this and thanks to the many hosts, installers & partners who've contributed so far
Booking now open 🎉 We've launched a new service to help you learn more about what it’s like to live with a heat pump: 🔎 Find a heat pump near you 📅 Arrange a visit to see one in action 💬 Ask your questions to those who know best VisitAHeatPump.com #VisitAHeatPump

Time for a thread on our new policy plan for home heating. Our homes are responsible for 14% of our carbon emissions, and we're well off track to reduce them. What should the new government do? nesta.org.uk/report/deliveri…

The new gov is intent on removing unnecessary planning barriers - hopefully this also means changing heat pump planning rules so that fewer need planning permission. Our view: - remove the '1m rule' - remove size restrictions - focus on noise nesta.org.uk/blog/planning-i…

Currently ~ 30% of installations (give or take) need planning permission - when they do, it's a very convoluted process We think govt should change rules to enable more HPs to be installed under permitted development. There's also scope to simplify the planning process itself

Just catching up on @janrosenow & @heatpolicyrich v useful new paper on gas grid decommissioning. While we'll need the gas grid for a while yet, long asset lifetime means we have to start planning an 'orderly decline' asap. They suggest 5 steps 👇 sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

UK households had the most expensive electricity in the EU for the first time last year. New @nesta_uk analysis by @laurenorso, and a good write up by @adamvaughan_uk in the Times This is a big problem… thetimes.com/uk/environment/…

While the topic hasn’t got much attention thus far, the UK’s future approach to energy policy and tackling climate change will be shaped by how the country votes on 4th July. Some brief thoughts on the big debates / flashpoints to watch out for over the next 5 weeks…1/11 🧵

When I speak to people about insulation and heat pumps, I think this is the point that confuses people the most. There are 3 options for getting a room heat pump ready: 1. Reduce the heat loss via insulation 2. Make the radiators bigger 3. Increase the flow temperature
There's still confusion it seems that low temperature requires low heat loss. That's one way of achieving it. But the other is a suitable sink system. Often, replacing radiators is a far cheaper option.

Interesting - worth reading the linked Creds briefing too Food for thought for heat pump transition - e.g. how much support, uptake & cost reduction you might need before regulating Condensing boilers had 10% market share & cost £167 more than trad boilers when regs announced
Condensing boiler installation rates. Remember that battle?! creds.ac.uk/wp-content/uploa…

There's some interesting stuff in the briefing on how industry stakeholders were brought together to work out how to roll out condensing boilers - which wouldn't have happened without the regulation

The shift to HPs is obviously bigger from a consumer perspective than the shift to condensing boilers (and many other things have changed in 20 years!) so the lessons may not be directly transferable, but it's still v useful to reflect on past experiences imo
