One of Matiba's first crisis as permanent secretary of education was leakage of KAPE exams in 1963. He says that they we're going to pull off a Matiangi. They wrote new exams, and got money to print them, but then minister of education Joseph Patience vetoed the decisions.
Almost all children scored As in all subjects that year, yet ther were few primary school spaces. So school heads were told to use the school reports.
It still wasn't enough to meet the demand for secondary schools, so many regional assemblies started new secondary schools with no teachers or with headmasters who had freshly completed O level.
Wah wah! Kumbe 8.4.4 bado ilikuwa 1963?

The more I read about British public schools, the more frustrated I get remembering an interview on the Lynn Ngugi show, where someone was saying that the British invented boarding schools in Kenya to distance Africans from their cultures. That was the result, not the intention.
The boarding schools were initially for wazungu, especially Prince of Wales and Limuru Girls. Their goal was to divorce children from their families to create rulers who were heartless in governing empire. Lord Delamere even said it, that they cant allow a class of poor whites to develop in Kenya, and the way to prevent that is by building posh public schools for whites. And public schools had existed in England centuries before they were brought here.
We Kenyans are not that important to the British, so that they invented things for us. They implemented the mess they also do at home.
At some point, we Kenyans will have to come down from our colonial pedestal, and learn to stop reading effects of actions as the purposes of those actions. The British notoriously hate planning. Like Kenyan journalists, they call planning "too much theory." What they brought here is not what they planned to do. It's what they bluffed doing. That's why they needed to use so much violence because very little worked out as they imagined.

Every time I remember the DISK we used to receive for speaking Kiswahili or mother tongue, I understand more clearly, as an adult, just how deeply colonialism was embedded in our upbringing, and how many of its scars we still carry.
We were being punished for speaking our own language. Shamed for expressing our own identity. And it was not merely a slap on the wrist. We were beaten, heavily, for something that should never have been considered wrong in the first place.
Imagine being taught to associate your own language with punishment and humiliation, while being conditioned to believe that another language made you more intelligent, more civilised or more worthy.
That is how colonialism works. It does not only conquer land. It colonises the mind, reshapes identity and teaches you to be ashamed of yourself.
And sometimes, the most painful part is realising how much of that conditioning survived long after the colonisers left.

Ameuliza Mtaka, ni kipi haswa kwenye katuni ya Akili and Me kinachohitaji mtu kutoka nje??
Mwisho Mtaka akagusa panapouma.

Just looked at the "Road to Singapore" plan, aka #KenyaVision2060.
The working assumption of the plan is that the West got where it is through good planning and policy.
Kenyans need to decide which universe they live in, and plan from there. Is it the reality of geopolitics, or the economic fantasy the West has constructed and reinforced with violence?
Bush Scientist 🇹🇿 retweeted
There are many Africans who cite Singapore as proof that colonialism cannot explain African poverty. What they consistently fail to mention is how Singapore actually built itself. Because Singapore did not develop through deregulation and laissez faire capitalism. It developed through aggressive state intervention, strategic nationalisation, public housing programmes that housed over 80% of its population, a government that planned its economy with surgical interventionism and refused to leave development to the invisible hand of the market.
So it is genuinely amusing to watch people invoke Singapore in the same breath as they argue against land reform, against nationalisation, against any meaningful state intervention in the economy, while promoting the very neoliberal policies that Singapore deliberately rejected on its path to development.
You cannot want Singapore’s results while opposing Singapore’s methods. That is a contradiction. You are attempting to achieve the outcomes of socialist politics with laissez faire capitalist policies, and calling anyone who points out the inconsistency an ideologue.

Wahaini hao walipanga kutekeleza azma yao tarehe 9 Januari, 1983. Lengo lao lilikuwa kumsubiri Mwalimu Nyerere arudi Dar Es Salaam akitokea Butiama.

Taiwan solved tax evasion in 1951 with a trick so cheap it should embarrass every tax authority on the planet.
The problem was an all-cash economy full of small shops. A merchant pockets the cash, skips the receipt, and the sale never existed. Auditors can't catch what was never recorded, and hiring enough of them to watch every noodle stand costs more than the missing tax.
So finance chief Ren Xianqun flipped the incentive. Print a lottery number on every receipt. Draw winners every two months on live TV. Top prize today: NT$10 million, about $310K.
Suddenly the customer and the shopkeeper want opposite things. The merchant wants the sale off the books. The customer wants the ticket. And there are millions more customers than merchants. Every transaction now carries a built-in witness demanding the paper trail.
Year one, reported tax revenue jumped 75%, from NT$29 million to NT$51 million. Seventy-five years later, roughly 70% of Taiwanese still play. Convenience stores redeem the smallest NT$200 prizes at the register, so even a coffee receipt feels like a scratch card.
The elegant part is what the audit force costs. The prize pool runs about NT$7 billion a year, roughly $20 million. In exchange, the government gets 23 million unpaid auditors working every checkout line in the country, forever. No inspector general on earth delivers that coverage at that price.
Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Slovakia all copied it. The most effective compliance tool ever built looks like a game, and that's exactly why it works.

Exactly. That's the cruelty. The government does this to us, using our coping mechanisms as capital. So we save to cope with the economy, GoK then goes for our savings. GoK even boasts about maandamano to wazungu. They annoy us with high taxes, we protest, they kill people, then GoK goes to Davos or G7 and says "Kenya is a good country because it has a vibrant democracy which keeps the government accountable."
We are in a cruel feedback loop that we need to break. #MaishaKazini

The worst thing that colonialism did was to capture the minds of African people. So many of us can't even conceptualize the world outside of colonial frameworks.

The algorithms have owners. The owners have location-specific agendas. The things the algorithms push in front of your eyeballs are determined by your location and the owners' agenda for it.
That's why there are several Nigerian TikTok creators and streamers who make interesting, engaging content about Nigerian history and current affairs, but except you stumble across them, you won't even know that they exist. What the algorithm will constantly push to your Nigerian eyeballs instead is "Peller" and "Jarvis."
There are funny and intelligent Nigerian stand-up comedians like Bovi who upload Instagram Reels content, but the algorithm will not regularly push them to you. If not for their large offline following, you would barely notice them. The Instagram Reels algorithm will instead constantly push brainrot Nigerian skitmakers to saturate your Nigerian brain with the psychological equivalent of codeine.
If you want to know what agenda the algorithm owners have in mind for a specific location, simply find out who the algorithms have made famous in that location. And if you live in a location where the algorithms want to fill your head with nothing but mindless brainrot, you owe a responsibility to yourself to resist being programmed by rich people who are literally trying to code stupidity into entire populations.
Because everything is war.

I think we east and southern Africans need to graduate from this argument. Our foreparents made it for rhetorical value, now we need to graduate to a philosophical and historically grounded argument.
My dear Africans, when Europeans were saying that they discovered a lake or mountain in Africa, they didn't mean nobody had seen it before. They meant that Africans were nobodies. That's what was contained in the Papal Bulls between 1452 and 1493 on the doctrine of discovery. And it was applied to indigenous peoples of the Americas first. By the time it reached Africa, 4 centuries had passed.
The Popes said that "Christians" (meaning Europeans) had the right to visit other lands, and if they found resources they wanted there, they could consider it "terra nullius" (land of nobody). That doctrine justified the evictions, massacres and enslavement of the people (the non-Christians, aka savages) already living on the land. It wasn't just about name change.
The doctrine continued to be used in court judgements of settler colonies and international law up to this century, and Pope Francis only repudiated it in 2021. And when you think of it, the government of Kenya is still using that doctrine for evictions for affordable housing, mineral sites and wildlife conservancies.
It's nice to make fun of absurdities in Western logic, but now let's chew the hard historical and philosophical implications.
And with all due respect to Miriam Makeba, this isn't a question she should have been asked. Remember Malcolm X pointed out that it's only when it comes to black people that entertainers are expected to articulate political positions.
We need to avoid confusing rhetorical rebuttals for political philosophy. We need to be careful to distinguish what is rhetorically clever and what is politically enlightening.
