The Winchell Trail (built 1912-14, improved by the WPA in 1936) runs along the Mississippi River gorge in South Minneapolis. It's just a tiny urban fragment of an "Appalachian Trail", but was designed in the same era and gives off the same vibe. – at Minneapolis, MN

As pioneers of the back-to-print movement, we want to welcome Life Magazine back to the world of ink on paper. For the better part of the 20th century, Life provided a home for some of America’s best photographers and essayists to go anywhere and everywhere across the country — at pay scales that were the envy of the entire industry. Lets hope the new Life stays true to its roots.
LIFE returns to print 11.23.26.

'O how they disturb the brown silence
Wherein a tilled field is enrapt
Like a woman by heavy foreboding entranced,
And sometimes one can hear them bickering
Over some carrion scented out somewhere ...'
Georg Trakl, 'The Ravens'
'Brown silence' has always stuck with me. It evokes, in rich detail, the vast silence that spreads over the fields, especially during the twilit phases of the day.

Good morning you beautiful people. Starting the day with my photo of a sunrise some time ago over Tower Bridge and The Thames. I had got up really early, wandered down past The Tower Of London to be met by one of the most incredible sunrises I’d ever seen. I stood there taking photos for several minutes as it just got more and more spectacular. This photo is completely unedited. It really looked like this. Hope you all have a wonderful day and remember: keep calm and stay drunk.

"When I walk through many cities today, what I often feel is a quiet crisis of beauty. Modern society has learned to build efficiently and rationally. We master codes... We know how to optimize volumes and squeeze maximum floor area out of every plot. But what we have increasingly forgotten is how to create places where people feel inwardly at home"

July 1, 1916. His friend Rob Gilson died on day one, and by 1918 all but one of Tolkien’s close friends were dead.
He came home with trench fever... and started writing about elves and a gardener named Sam.
Sam was the English private he served beside in the trenches. Tolkien called those men “so far superior to myself.”
He picked wonder over the wreckage. We can too.
