Much needed article on Guinea three years on from the coup, w/ excellent analysis of dynamics that have led to the all too familiar patterns of increased repression & growth of military rivalries following coup
It’s been three years since Mamadi Doumbouya took power in #Guinea, on 5 September 2021. I have a short piece just out with a colleague in @africaarguments. africanarguments.org/2024/09… A thread. 1/17

❓Why do some states develop them?
❓What influence do they have on #military organizations, their soldiers & peacekeeping more broadly?

Why do non-democratic countries contribute towards peacekeeping missions?
@MagDwyer draw on interviews with soldiers and military decision makers in The Gambia to answer this puzzle. Read her #free article 👉doi.org/10.1093/ia/iiae056
It explores aims to use peacekeeping for regime maintenance. But, interviews shows how these goals can be misaligned w soldiers' experience. Rather than draw soldiers closer to the regime, the peacekeeping experience led to a distancing from the forces for soldiers on return home

This is a great issue. The article on Burkina Faso is particularly well done, looking at what very much appears to be forced conscription of dissidents.
