Rightmove's "900,000" claim was still on its New Homes page this week.
Off the homepage in 2021. Off the other pages in April 2025. Back on a month later. Never substantiated in 16 years.
Agents have to make their claims stand up. So should the dominant portal - particularly as it increased its agent fees from £379 to £1,762 per branch over that period on average.

Last week Sweden's dominant portal, Hemnet, launched its first ever free listing service for agents.
A free-to-list rival, Booli, had overtaken it in traffic during the summer. Turns out consumers prefer to see every property in one place, without priority given to agents that can pay the most. Funny, that.
No one ever thought Hemnet could be ousted as number one. A free-to-list portal has done it - and forced the incumbent to go free too.

This morning: gone.
Same story as the 900k/200k figures it called "historic", which archived records show vanished in April 2025 - then came back in May.
Historic things don't usually come back.
Was it because traffic dipped without the false numbers so they decided to sneak them back?

Last month Rightmove quietly deleted two numbers from its Google listings: "over 900,000 for sale" and "over 200,000 to rent".
Right before we took it to the ASA.
They'd been there since 2010. 16 years. Never substantiated.
Makes you think about another organisation that's spent sixteen years not playing by the same rules as everyone else (of course, Man City have appealed ...)
