President Putin is a murderer.
His soldiers use rape as a weapon.
He has launched wars costing thousands of lives.
His agents have stolen children and destroyed families.
Russia today is what President Reagan correctly called it: the evil empire.

OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

King Death calling two of his victims to Judgement in St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen, on the memorial to Patrick Scougal, c1690. Scougal was the last-but-one Church of Scotland Bishop of Aberdeen before the episcopacy was abolished, a notorious anti-Catholic and witch-hunter. 1/3

'Tell me, is it the crack of the pool balls
Neon buzzing
Telephone's ringing, it's your second cousin
And is it the barmaid that's smiling
In the corner of her eye
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye'

George Orwell worked for the BBC for 2 years and didn’t particularly enjoy it. But at the end he told his boss that no one had ever asked him to broadcast anything he didn’t believe. I’ve now worked for it for 60 years, and can honestly say exactly the same thing.

For Michaelmas, a St Michael I've been wanting to see for a long time - on the #ww1 then #ww2 #warmemorial at Blewbury, now in #Oxfordshire, and of course by Violet Pinwill's company, 1925, the #ArtsandCrafts reason I needed to see it! Note the anguished soul in the scales!

T. S. Eliot's "Murder in the Cathedral" is 90 years old this year. This amusing illustration is from Dominic Droomgoole's study "Time Frames: A Century of Proscenium Playwrights" (2026). And yet "Murder in the Cathedral" was devised not for a theatre but for Canterbury Cathedral.
