š§ Unlike AI, the brain has no external designer!
New research from MIT's McGovern Institute reveals that artificial neural networks can build their own learning machinery using simple local rules (like "neurons that fire together, wire together") instead of engineered back-propagation.
By utilizing self-assembling motifs, these randomly connected units successfully organize into functional circuits capable of image classification and pattern recognition matching conventionally trained modelsāmarking a major leap toward biological plausibility in AI and understanding brain plasticity! š¤āØ

I fully agree with this: looking after our mental health and psychological development goes beyond the individual; while it certainly requires personal effort and work, it is, in essence, a collective undertaking.

I fully endorse this statement by @StanDehaene: there is no legitimate distinction between two kinds of consciousness ("access vs phenomenal consciousness", the first related to easy questions and the later related to the hard question). What we experience is what we access.
New talk by @StanDehaene about the leading theory of consciousness, the Global Neuronal Workspace Theory!

This is what billionaire ownership of the media means:
Mark Zuckerbergās Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests.
Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election.
Larry Ellisonās TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk.

The Braak Paradox: When Parkinsonās pathology and clinical progression disconnect. For more than two decades, the Braak hypothesis has shaped how we think about Parkinsonās disease, suggesting that abnormal alpha-synuclein pathology spreads through the brain in a predictable sequence as the disease advances. What resonates with me about this new study by di Biase and colleagues, and the accompanying thoughtful editorial by RodrĆguez-Violante in Neurology, is that the biology may be far more complicated than the model. In 61 people with autopsy-confirmed Parkinsonās disease, Braak stage did not correlate with motor disability, disease duration, age at death, or brain weight. In other words, having more widespread alpha-synuclein pathology did not necessarily mean having more advanced clinical disease. The editorial importantly reminds us that this finding does not invalidate Braak staging or the importance of alpha-synuclein, but rather exposes the limitations of using pathology as a clock for clinical progression. Parkinsonās is not one disease following one predictable path, and the frequent presence of other pathologies, including tau, amyloid, and vascular disease, further complicates the picture. For me, the lesson is that we must be careful not to confuse what we see under the microscope with what patients actually experience. As we develop biological staging systems, biomarkers, and disease-modifying therapies, we need to measure not only abnormal proteins but also neuronal loss, clinical disability, and the individual trajectories of people living with Parkinsonās. The patient, not the pathology, must remain at the center of our science.
