The great thing about having a Portuguese dad is you can’t visit without leaving with something random foisted on you. God knows what. Sometimes it’s 3 gallons of olive oil. It could be, & has been, a black leather jacket and a box of head-on shrimp. You will never predict it

I build expensive journals for people, but have come to realize customers buy them as an aspirational purchase, not a practical one. I’ve been told many times they’re “too nice to use” even though I design them for that purpose
I handwrite first drafts of pretty much everything. Sometimes I buy these expensive journals, but when I sit down to write in them, my farm-boy hand recoils like a human body rejecting a baboon heart, and I go back to writing on plain printer paper like always.

I don’t use journals myself. I write by hand but on an iPad mini. My paper style is one I made myself, light green letter size w margins. Advantages: I can write in the dark, the ink is erasable, and I can zoom in to fill the margins w tiny script in case I want to add something

Watching the DGG Halloween trilogy & I’m way in the minority here but Halloween Kills is kind of amazing. Everyone is so hilariously stupid, I’m loving it

Again, remember that this use of AI is a tool of *management* and production — not labor. This $78.5M cost savings is good for *management*. This also represents $78.5M in lost wages for skilled artists and craftspeople
"Merry the Christmas Witch" director Tom Walsh says his movie adaptation of the 2012 children’s book would've cost $80 million if he did not use AI. The final budget was $1.5 million. “We were kind of stuck. The doors are not very open to new kind[s] of ideas and new kind[s] of stories and everything, and that makes it a little tough for independent filmmakers, so that’s where AI came in.” variety.com/2026/film/news/m…

watching Halloween II for the first time & i thought the stuff about Dr. Loomis being a homicidal maniac were just wisecracks. He just committed assault w intent to murder of what seems to be a child & chased him into an oncoming car that burst into flames. Boy! Not a nice fellow

Also committed A&B on a police officer trying to stop him but evidently they’re ok with this and the preceding offenses & have taken him on a ride along

After 3 years, the Lizzie Borden trademark lawsuit seems to be over. Mixed results for everyone, but both businesses can still operate as usual. I broke down all the legal mumbo-jumbo here: heraldnews.com/story/news/co…

When you use historical images, you should have a sense of responsibility to the human beings depicted & to understand layers of interpretation. A photo taken from the 1860s, you’re already seeing a *photographer’s interpretation* of one second in someone’s complex life

Been thinking about this a lot lately bc in the Lizzie Borden community you see a ton of people using gen AI to animate their old pictures & act out creepy little scenarios. They feel it brings them to life & feel closer to them. What they’re doing is playing w paper dolls

They were once complex human beings, became icons & avatars against their will, and to play around with them that way kinda further diminishes their humanity imo. I find it all very anti-humanist

Hope some realize now that their perception of big-J journalists “not doing their jobs” was in fact due to a great example of them doing their jobs - diligence, skepticism, verification - standards the amateurs skip because their only guiding principle is engagement

I always thought it was bizarre that my school asked middle-school-age boys to shower together side by side in a big open room w no booths, curtains, or privacy, & then go about your day having been seen naked by your classmates & your bullies. What pervert decided that policy
Do you ever think about how weird it was in junior high and high school gym class that they were like “get really sweaty then go change in 4 minutes and sit in math class”
