If you don’t like what Trump is doing in America don’t let Nigel Farage do it here - take action - join the Liberal Democrats today: libdems.org.uk/join
This will 'probably' turn into a bit of a thread. Apologies!
I've struggled with staying on here given all that @elonmusk has done here & the US. As a media for news, journalists & stories I saw its strengths. I also saw too many downfalls with lies, disinformation & hatred.
Yesterday @BBCNews referred to the insurrection as an 'incident.' This must not continue. News outlets MUST call it out for what it is, otherwise I fear for where this will lead us. Have we forgotten already all that happened in 1930s ending in WWII? We MUST do better 😪

America, as a liberal empire, is no more.
Welcome to a new era of US governance by oligarchy, where billionaire members of Mar-a-Lago decide US policy.
And guess what? Protecting the European Union or the living standards of Europeans is not on their priority list!
They don't care about post-1945 Europe. The fall of the Berlin Wall, EU enlargement, our single currency. The expermiental steps we have made, away from our imperial past.
These are far away things that mean nothing to them.
Who will defend Europe? We are completely unprepared for this feral new world.
Remember the 🇪🇺 is an experiment & has no automatic right to exist. It needs to be nurtured. Pro-Europeans will have to stand up and fight for something more than the EU we have today.
A real Union, that protects, brings prosperity & stands up for its citizens in this new world.
Trump will bring big change, but such historic moments can be opportunities as well.
Choose activism over despair. Raise money for Ukraine, join a political party, stand for election. All of us individually as pro - europeans can make a small change to define our own future.

I said this a few weeks ago. And I’ll always feel this way about the 2024 election.👇

So on the pardon front, we have a day when an outgoing president feels the need to pardon lots of people who haven’t committer crimes, and an incoming president who will likely pardon lots of people who definitely have (Jan 6th insurrectionists).

Europe doesn’t need your hollow slogans or your brand of tech oligarchy.
🇪🇺 must be defended from nationalist populism and profiteers who undermine democracy, or risk losing the solidarity and progress that make Europe truly great!

When three people on top own more wealth than the bottom half of America …
When a handful of corporations control the economy …
When you get one vote but billionaires can spend hundreds of millions of dollars to elect the candidate of their choice …
That’s oligarchy.

"Forming a Customs Union with the EU is the single biggest thing we can do to turbocharge our economy in the medium and long term.

Robert. As you know, the record Crown Court backlog accrued under Conservative rule.
You tweet about it now. But what did you do about it then?
Today, across the country, court rooms are sitting empty.
Just look at the shocking figures below.
Meanwhile crimes as serious as rape and sexual assault are being listed for trial in 2027 and beyond. Victims are being forced to put their lives on hold.
AND the population waiting trial on remand in our prisons (one of the biggest reasons for the capacity pressures) remains high as trials are delayed.
There are currently 17,600 people in prison on remand. That’s 20% of the entire prison population. The proportion of prisoners on remand has increased by 9 per cent on last year.
You’d think Labour would be doing everything possible to solve this?
But yesterday the most senior civil servant at the Ministry of Justice said the court backlog was likely to get even worse.
The Lady Chief Justice has said there is capacity in the system for 6,500 sitting days. But, inexplicably, Labour have only providing funding for an extra 2,500 sitting days. That means there are 4,000 sitting days a year being completely wasted.
She says the government are “not saving money” by rationing court capacity. They are making a difficult situation, worse.
There are literally part-time judges volunteering to hear cases for free, but can’t because of the lack of capacity in the courts. Existing judges are being forced to remove cases from their lists.
This is not the choice of the judiciary, or that of hardworking ushers, clerks and listing officers who do such important work.
Labour’s plan is failing. They have launched (another) review, but that won’t report for months when they could add sitting days right now.
Their incompetence is badly letting down victims and eroding trust in the criminal justice system.
