I have thousands of audio recordings of WWII figures that almost nobody outside academia has ever heard. I'm turning them into subtitled videos and publishing them for everyone. This one: Heinrich Himmler, June 19, 1942 in Kiev , addressing the officers of the SS division "Das Reich", rebuilt after heavy losses in Russia. A rare original recording. Not a speech for the public, but a talk to his own officers. Every word, with English subtitles and historical context on screen. What he tells them: • Invading the USSR was "the most necessary war there has ever been" • It was "a race war" • He mocks soldiers who thought "the Jew is a human being too." SS men, he says, were "not burdened at all" by such scruples. • Soviet people are "human raw material, or 'subhuman'" • Christianity is still alive enough to "hinder" racial thinking. • The goal: "soil" where German "blood" can multiply, "to rule this continent" As he spoke, the Holocaust was already underway. SS and police units had murdered hundreds of thousands of Jews in the occupied Soviet territories. Belzec and Sobibor were operating. Treblinka opened five weeks later. Two years later, units of this division hanged 99 men in Tulle and murdered 643 people at Oradour-sur-Glane. Himmler killed himself in British custody on May 23, 1945.
