Arnold Schwarzenegger once revealed he accepted Batman & Robin (1997) for $30 million partly to “pay back” his longtime rival Sylvester Stallone.
“I was getting a million dollars for ‘CONAN 2’… Then I read, Sly just made a deal for $5 million for a movie. I said, what the hell?”
Arnold later earned $10 million for ‘TOTAL RECALL’, only for Stallone to land a $15 million deal. “Jesus Christ, I can’t catch up,” he recalled.
Eventually, both stars reached $20 million as their standard payday. Then came ‘BATMAN & ROBIN’—a movie Arnold didn’t even want to do because he didn’t want to play the villain, Mr. Freeze.
“They call me back… and they say we give you $30 million plus we give you points and back end… and I said, okay.”
So, Schwarzenegger saw the massive ‘BATMAN & ROBIN’ paycheck as a chance to get even after years of watching his rival earn more.
Ironically, the 1997 superhero film became infamous for its campy tone and ice-related one-liners, despite Arnold’s enormous salary.
