This summer, the night before a long train trip, I coded a tiny counting game for my 3 year old. It had to work offline. Every evening I coded, every morning she tested. After two wrong answers in a row she'd shut down, so now the game tells her mistakes are part of the way. Three months later it's Girafoufou: calm learning games for ages 3-6, no ads, no trackers. After 25 minutes the giraffe goes for a nap and the screen stops. The English edition is open, right in the browser: girafoufou.com/en?utm_source… If you have a 3-6 year old, I'd love to hear what they think.

A kindergarten teacher shut my app down today without opening it. Her answer, passed on by someone who was kindly sharing it for me: "3 and 4 year olds, it's no screens." I half agree with her. Most kids' apps are built like slot machines. A reward every few seconds, a shop in the middle of the game, no end. When the business model is your child's attention, the product is designed to never let go. So I built the opposite, and on paper it's a terrible idea. Girafoufou stops by itself after 25 minutes. The giraffe goes for a nap and the screen switches off. No ads, no tracker, nothing to buy mid-game. Less time in the app, by design. Every growth playbook says I'm doing it wrong. But "no screens" isn't a plan for most parents at 6pm with dinner on the stove and a 4-year-old hanging off their leg. A screen that ends on its own might be.

"What did you do today?" "Nothing." If you've got a preschooler, you know this one by heart 😅 So at the end of Girafoufou, the giraffe recaps what your child did. Not for us. So they can tell you about it. Any tricks to get them to tell you about their day?

« T'as fait quoi aujourd'hui ? » « Rien.

Is 3 too young for the theatre? On weekends we think playground or carousel. But a show teaches them to follow a story, to laugh, to feel big emotions. And mine laughed the loudest in the whole room. How old was yours at their first show?

Week two of trying to get parents to try the kids’ app I built for my daughter. The channel working best so far: local Facebook groups. Only towns I have a real link to: where I was born, where I went to school. A true story, no link in the post, the link only to people who ask. Today: 30 posts. One parents’ group near Paris sent 8 people asking to test in two hours. What’s the least glamorous channel that actually worked for you?

The thing I'm proudest of in what we're building isn't a game. After 25 minutes, the giraffe gets sleepy and goes for a nap. The screen switches off. No negotiating. Every parent who's sent us feedback has thanked us for that one. In your house, is switching off the screen a battle, or does it go fine?

The most brutally honest user tester I've ever had: my 3-year-old. This summer I coded in the evenings and she tested in the mornings. Two mistakes in, she'd shut down. So now the giraffe tells her that getting it wrong is part of the journey. And we try again. No product meeting ever taught me that.
